Platydoras armatulus- Raphael cat

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So far the new arrivals are looking somewhat normal. Outside of not eating they seem to be fine. I wonder if they are just on strike right now because they are in a 5 gal quarantine tank? Any helpful thoughts on this anyone?

Just give a little more time. I rarely see my Raphael eat so once in awhile drop a pellet or two with lights off.

Ok cool. I have kept lights off other than to check in and make sure breathing is right and eyes are clear. Also have floating plant. Not feeding much. But I tried some brine shrimp with garlic and probiotics. I felt rejected when they didn’t even budge. Lol. I though for sure they would move when I dropped it in but no dice yet.

... Does anyone have any helpful tips on quarantine for these guys?

I'd go by their looks and (eventual) appetite. I don't think anyone medicates their fish in QT unless they see a reason to, or the fish came from the wild, or they are an importer.

... I’m hesitant on using meds unless needed because I know lots of cats can be sensitive...

IME a myth. But I am open to schooling. When I treat my fish I see no distinction and make no distinction between cats and non-cats.

If they are healthy and the water is clean and there is no other stress, they will start feeding sooner or later. I'd think they are settling and getting used to their new small quarters. They barely move, so they don't spend much energy, hence, they can afford to fast and be moody a long time.

The qt is for monitoring. No need to treat usually for Raphael cats unless exhibiting weight loss, not eating and not acting normal.

Wouldn’t worry about the Raphael cats not eating it will soon.

So I moved these guys over today.

Here is one of them checking out the pleco. So far they seem to be much happier now they have room to stretch out their fins.

My wife and her friend didn’t believe me that they were talking catfish, but really got a kick out of it when they started squawking. Lol

They are not in the same side of the tank as Donatello yet, but I may take the divider out some time soon.

Is one of these and an ancistrus compatible if there are no other bottom feeders?

What are good foods for them? My spotted eats mini algae wafers and bottom feeder pellets, as I heard they are more herbivorous than striped cats. Do striped cats need more of a carnivorous diet?

They usually are compatible, shouldn't pay any attention to each other except maybe when trying to hide in the same spot.

My very limited understanding is raphs are omnivorous, which means they can feed on a wide range of feeds and remain healthy. In the wild, if the feed availability varies from season to season, their gastrointestinal systems are able to adjust to whatever's currently available in plenty.

For instance, it's been shown in African cichlids that their intestinal length increases greatly when feeding mostly on plant matter, as it requires a longer residence time in the gut to be digested well, and decreases when feeding on animal matter.

In any case, a diversified diet is usually the best for our pets, unless one feeds a complete-nutrition pellet / flake developed for this type of fish in particular.
