pool filter sand also works real well. and it ussualy doesnt need much screening, play sand doesnt really either

The only reason I screen it is to make it more fine for my leopard geckos. You'd be surprised how much aquarium gravel sized silt I find in it.

i would never use sand for a reptile. it causes impactions and sometimes has fatal results. almost lost one of my leopard geckos to it.

Thanks for the heads up.

When I set up my beardie's cage, we used play sand but I baked it for 20-30 min on 250 degrees to make sure that they are not parasites in it. I rather play it safe. It doesn't take that long and I haven't had an issue for 2 years with mites. Knock on wood.

its a little hard to bake 3 cubic feet though.

And you have scientific evidence of this? Please, the only reason you get impaction is because of poor husbandry. Try starting there.

Whoa......... don't turn this into the ongoing argument about sand or no sand. i think it has been proven that sand is not the cause of impaction but rather some bad feeding practices with poor supervision.

bought it at lowes and just put it directly into the enclosures. i am a bit of a mite freak since it was so hard to eliminate them last time.

Yea man, I remember your mite problem, it was pretty bad...

I wouldn't worry too much about the mites coming in with the sand, never have experienced it. I just cut open two 50LB bags of playsand, and dump straight in to my tank, never had a problem...
