Play Sand?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If I had to choose playsand or Pool Filter Sand, I would choose the Pool Filter Sand. The Playsand looks natural, but is crazy hard to clean. And when you do water changes and syphon waste off the bottom of the tank, it's very hard to tell what is waste and what is sand with Playsand. PFS is easier to see where waste and food debris are. And I happen to love the white look, maybe that's just me. Plus, you can pretty much dump it right in the tank (after turening filters off, obviously) and it won't cloud at all.

I never use anything other than BD Tradings Aquarium sand. I used play sand once before and in around 2 weeks It was aerobic pocket city. I never recommend anything other than aquarium specific sand, its the correct grain size to prevent aerobic pocket build up.

If that's the case then great, I like the look of a combo. of gen. purpose and play better, and don't have anerobic issues.
Of course I stir mine at every w/c. :)

No problem.
Play sand and "quickrete" general purpose sand around here is ~$3.00 per 50lbs. at Lowe's/HD.
Again, really dirty, but worth the extra time for cleaning.
Congrats. on the 150.  :woot:

Thanks! I really love the setup! I need to add a few things but other than that im really happy with my first monster tank. (monster to me)

I just bought "All Purpose" sand. Two 40 lb bags. I rinsed each bag in a 40 gallon rubber maid container until the water was crystal clear. I put both bags in my tank and I really love the look! The water in the tank now is nearly crystal clear! Thanks for the feedback:thumbsup:

Make sure there are no pesticides or other chemicals on it. There are lots of people at work asking why their fish are dying. We'll ask, "did you put anything in the tank recently?" and they'll say something like, "well, I found this cool rock..." so, make sure you clean that sucker before you put it in ze tank.

My friend works for a cement company so I get plenty of clean sand and gravel.

Just say no to play sand. It's nasty and looks like mud because it's too fine.

I like pool filter sand much better.

I love play sand, just when cleaning, use a python, just like gravel, except instead of having it upright, have the tube at a 45* angle.
