Play Sand?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I hated the playsand I rinsed each bag about 8 times and had about 250lbs of it in my 240 previously. It was nice after I got it to settle with the aid of some chem's and a few days with filtration. It wasn't bad but it was just to dark for me and looks sorta muddy I thought. I had it mixed with gravel for a natural look. It is cheap which is nice but the pool filter sand is cheap also and 1-2 rinses and its perfectly clean, granule size is a bit bigger also. I run the estes sand (expensive aquarium sand) in a couple smaller tanks and really like it but it was way to much for me to spend on my pond or 240. My vote goes for pool filter sand on a tank that size ~Trent

I've had the play sand in my tank for a month now and have yet to have a problem. as for anaerobic pockets, I just use the malaysian trumpet snails.

i personally have pool filter sand and love the way it looks. it took me like 20 minutes to rinse it off and about a day for all the particles to settle. and its resonably priced

After I added the all-purpose sand about 2 hrs later it was completely crystal clear. Right when I added it, it was pretty much crystal clear. I like the look.

i used play sand in my 20 gallon, i like the look but took a while to clean and when i didnt water changes it got sucked up in the vac cause it was too light. now i have pool filter sand in my 75 its 100x better. and its heavyer so the vac doesnt suck it up. but if you insist on using play sand id say the best way to clean it is put it in a bucket and then run the water and let it over flow it its clear.

My geo (the reason I changed to sand) helps me bunches on that issue.
I still stir even if I might not really need to.:)
