If anyone still cares 
everything is now under control. Ammo down and finally getting decent nitrate readings. Last test was 40ppm before a waterchange.
Thanks to all that had useful input. Have also removed some of the fish and beefed up filtration to lighten the load.

Man thats great, last time I had a ammonia spike in my tank it took about 2 weeks before the BB re-established seemed like an eternity but I basically did the same thing lots of prime, stability and water changes and lots of areation. Didnt loose a single fish
