Playing Catch-Up with Ammonia

Yes your tank being overstocked can cause ammonia but the fact that you had 0 nitrates showed that no beneficial bacteria was within your tank. Seems like everything you're doing is correct though by adding in BB. With that stock in a tank that size i believe you should be getting well over 20 nitrates. Yikes :( I think your right.... worst part is I now started keeping black rays and will soon have to switch back over to black sand anyway :banghead:. Welll off to get some Safe.... thanks for all the help everyone. So far so good

Least I can say is can you temporarily add some Java ferns or Amazon swords to reduce some of the ammonia?

I'd recommend you just keep it simple; lots of water changes and stop feeding unless you have pups. If you can loan your rays to someone you trust local until things resolve that would be best. It would be a shame to lose a ray to poor water. Good luck.

Funds are a bit tight at the moment. Rather buy safe and bacteria than amazons. Mat is 20bucks at LFS.

Don't trust any of my "buddies" with rays. Will add more bacteria and some safe later today

Below is a response posted on Seachem's product support forum to someone with a question similar to yours: http://www.seachem.com/support/forums/showthread.php?t=3824&highlight=prime

"Thank you for your question. When adding new water directly to your tank using a python, we recommend dosing Prime for the entire volume of the tank, rather than for just the amount of water being changed. This will ensure that the water is fully conditioned and therefore safe for your tank inhabitants. There is no need to worry about Prime building up in the system, as it really only remains active for up to 48 hours.

For those who are adding replacement water to buckets and pre-treating the new water with Prime, they need only dose the Prime for the volume of the replacement water, and not the entire volume of the tank. We hope this helps, and have a wonderful day!"

Whether or not it is really necessary, I cannot say. Perhaps they are just trying to get you to use more of their product, or perhaps what they are saying has merit and will prevent your fish from chloramine/chlorine poisoning. It's cheap enough where I don't mind following their recommendations. If you want to risk your fish by going against the manufacturers recommendations, good luck.
