Playing Catch-Up with Ammonia

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes, I'm aware. I need a solution tho not a restatement of my problem :banghead: An upgrade is in the works my friend. Just need to survive till then. Even considering lightening the load but the rays must stay. Everyone has settled in nicely so I will be cutting down feeding and maybe getting two pf the polys out to start. Just need a solution to the ammonia before it gets out of hand ya know. Maybe ammo chips? Seachem etc etc ya know...

Sounds good. Going to pack this 2260 with seachem matrix as advised by strollo22 and keep with the changes till the bacteria catches up.

I'm not sure they will survive though. I hope someone thinks of something though.

If you were closer I could sell you some zeolite rock. I have several hundred pounds. I uses to import koi and we put them in the pond to absorb the ammonia while in quarentine. They can be recharged by soaking in brine/saltwater for re-use. Zeolite binds ammonia and will not starve your filter. I know this doesn't help your current problem but maybe you can find some locally. If you use any zeolite product make sure no salt is in the tank otherwise it will release the accumilated ammonia back into the water. Good luck.

Wrslrcichlid. I know ammonia is bad but what is a tolerable level while the bacteria build up so I don't keep doing changes till its zero. Instead it becomes zero by balancing itself out again. Give me a safe number if even possible

If your ph goes above 7, no amount of ammonia is safe...as little as .5 ppm will cause stress and above 1 will kill. If your ph is below 7 then the ammonia is mostly ionized and does not do much damage. Do not allow your ph to jump high...test your new water's ph just in case.

Will do. Usually ph is on the low end. 6.4 at most. I will test it first thing tomorrow morning

Salt is all up in my tank :-\. I will look out for some tho.

Frankly that is why your fish is still alive :)

Sounds good. On a side note my system was doing just fine with 50% wc every 5 days or so prior to me switching out all of my sand. At most id get a little nitrate showing up if I waited 7 days or more to do a change. Seems like a lot of bacteria was hangin out in the sand and the tank took a hit with the loss. I didn't give it much thought.

Just did a test after a few hour after 30% wc.
Ph went up abit to 6.8/7 (thanks to this 7.6 water:mad:)
Ammo is btw .25ppm and .50ppm
Nitrate still at 2.5ish.

I think my best bet it to chill on the water changes to keep my ph low as advised (glad I didn't change more water than I just did) and setup this 2260 ASAP tomorrow when I buy media and TRY to get some bacteria ina bottle to kick it up a bit. Will also squeeze some bacteria out of one of my other filters into the 60. Everyones active and swimming till I decided to freak em out with a water test and the flower ray spazzed and scared the others.
