why don't u put in the tank a couple of Severum and a couple of mild temperament cichlids like Uaru??

a couple is always better than a single specimen IMHO.

I'm adding a 4" GT and a 3.5" male con that I already have. :-)

As far as dithers go, I cannot BELIEVE how mellow my oscar is, so I doubt he'd eat giant danios. I've got him with about 20 convict fry right now and he hasn't even tried to go after them after several days. Unbelievable.

I just want dithers mainly to add more motion to the tank, as well as pick up any food scraps my oscar spits out his gills. I enjoy the giant danios in my SRT's tank very much.

Someone mentioned "red hook silver dollars"-- I don't think I've ever seen any-- what are they like??

And I'll PM you about the FX5, LemonHead. :)

Going back a few post's a second heater was mentioned, The only reason I say two is for a backup.
If one was to fail the other one will keep thing's normal.
Good luck and waiting for some pics.

How about a Visitherm 250 and 150 combined? I already have a 150 and I could put the two at opposite ends of the tank?

""used 90 gallon"" famous last words. though it sounds like the tank hasnt been dry for very long if at all. if you want opinions my first one would be to add water slowly over a period of 4 days say 20 gallons a day. only coming from my own bad experiences, this would me my first advice, add slowly. and if that means putting fish in a rubbermaid with a bubble maker in the meantime so be it. I wouldnt put too much thought into heaters right now, you have other considerations to think about and honestly its april, all those fish mentioned would be fine for 48 hrs minimum without a heater. worry about cycling and getting the fish agression if any sorted out.

what size granules is 'pool filter sand' ? I know average sand granules will kill those whisper filters in under 2 weeks, so make sure its not regular sized sand. and that 250watt heater is more than fine. worry about your lighting way more because a nicely lit tank can make your results look amazing while dim lighting can make it look @#$% no matter how good the setup SHOULD look. I would go for a glass top for the tank and than say 3 18" or 24" flourescent bulbs sitting in theyre sockets/hoods on top of the glass. that should be plenty cheap and LOTS of lighting ;) I worry more about lighting than heaters, most visitors sit and look/talk about your tank around 8-11pm

The "used" 90g actually belongs to my parents so I know exactly where it's been, and it's in tip-top shape. No worries there!

I won a new FX5 filter on ebay today, as well as a 48" Coralife compact fluorescent striplight (for $25!!). Very happy!

As for the pool filter sand, the Whisper filters are in a tank right now that has the same substrate, and they're doing just fine with no impactions.

To be safe I'd always cut my intakes when using sand. Planning to add a large canister (not sure which yet) to my tank and I'll be keeping the the intake a good 8" above the sand. I've got PFS and it's pretty coarse grain, not the fine powdery play/beach sand. The other thing you can do is put a screen over the intakes, I'm playing with that idea but I'm thinking a fine enough mesh to keep sand out will keep the fish poo out or clog anyway.

Yeah that's good advice. With my larger cichlids I keep the intakes far above the sand level because they love to fling the sand everywhere! I haven't had any issues yet (knock on wood).

Yeah they toss it around pretty good. Also I know there are guys on here whose cichlids actually spit sand into the filters. My tank has an overflow box so the intake is at the surface and I still see sand in the sump occasionally.
