If he is getting picked on by an mbuna, it sounds like you got the runt of the litter all right lol

Not runt, gotta put into consideration that a 4" mbuna is full grown while a 4" RD is still consider a baby.

I also believe it's stress from the Mbuna.

I think he is just in shock with the new environment, make sure you provide hiding places for him in his new home. He will come around after a few days hopefully. Just keep changing his water making sure the water is healthy and in the safe.

You do know a Red Devil grows up to 10 inches right? And will pretty much rape every thing in the tank and dig up everything, destroy plants. I think he will need at least 50G with minimum tank mates. Or ones that can defend itself. I'm going to rehome mines and get some Blood Parrots!

hey...my RD is improving. He ate 2 feeder guppies yesterday and he is bullying the mbuna. But, i'm afraid that he would be addicted to live fish as my LFS person told me that introducing live fish will make the RD more aggressive. So i dont want to give him live food. I shall try HIKARI GOLD pellets tomorrow. But i doubt that his growth rate has declined. His age is around 6-7 months and he is around 4.5 inches. Is this ratio normal?? I've heard that these rowdies will grow at a ratio of 1 inch per month. Going by this,he must be atleast 6 inches. Is it OK?? sorry to trouble you people but just getting curious

if its something like an auratus and they are similar sizes the mbuna will kick the rd/midas ass, they dont fight like other cichlids and are very fast most juvi ca/sa cichlids cant handle it

yeah...it's a yellow auratus. He is very fast for the RD to catch hold of.

i agree. i have africans and americans, and africans are so much more aggresive for their size =P
ive got some angry little purple coloured hybrid that batters everything. even fish twice its size!
so im guessing your african is an aggresive species,
any chance on some pics ?

I don't recommend you feed them live feeders from a pet store because they carry all sorts of diseases. If you want to feed them live feeders, either breed them or quarantine them in a separate tank for at least a month to see if they die or not. As for size, it's different, depends on his genes. Just rehomed my RD today. Going to get some "King Kong Blood Parrots"....Can't wait they are a beauty (Super RED! ) and don't crap as much or get as big as a RD.

My friend has a FH which is of the same age. I feed pellets to my RD whereas he feeds feeder guppies daily. His FH is now almost twice the size of my RD:confused::confused:. I dont want to feed him feeders coz i heard that it makes the fish more aggressive and i dont want to take a chance of introducing parasites into my tank. But i want my RD to be HUGE. Please tell me some alternate which is as effective as feeding live fishes. Thanx.

try getting earthworms and ghost shrimp
or you can also feed him dried shrimp and once in a while you can feed them beef heart or chicken heart
and you don't want your fish hooked onto live fish
one mistake and pooofff all that taking care of your fish has to be flushed
