that's bigger than i thought it was. Definately not a gibby nor a pure joselimaianus. T time has the valid point of the cross breeds between different species in both the Hypostomus and Pterygoplichthys genus.

Slight de-railment, but whoa davo is a mod!

definently not hypostomus.

Davo,
I breed L001s in ponds and they can get to 50cm easily and as with many L numbers, the L001 will also interbreed readily. I breed Gibbys too and a few other suckermouths. (all in seperate ponds of course).

And as I am sure your aware, fish exporters and fish breeders often get stock mixed up and mislabelled which makes it even harder. Hmmm could be Pterygoplichthys parnaibae since this doesnt look like a pure L001 to me either. Time will tell :)

Thats cool, would like to see some pics of it. I'm sure most Pterygoplichthys sp. will interbreed. Do you just leave them be, or do you pull the fry out? Are they mud bank ponds etc? How much do they go for over down under?

Davo - I use mud ponds. I explained a little about them in a Giant Goramy thread in the breeders forum. Photo of one enclosed.

I usually pull fry out when they are qpprox 5cm. Used to harvest egg balls by sticking my arms in, pulling daddy out and then inserting a small hose down before "flushing" eggs out into a waiting net but the natural way gives me more robust fry even though harvest is harder. Pond culture is tougher on fry but colour and survival rates better for customers. Initially I used to hormone induce but after a few seasons even the harder L number broodstock seem to have "learned" what to do. Prices vary but as they are not allowed to be imported, they are much more expensive than overseas.

I have some male Gibbies around 75cm and even with my 2 large hands their heads are too wide to encircle. Distinguished retired gentlemen now though, they are enjoying the good life :)
