The guy told me, if I were to sell it(Which I probably will not do), it wouldn't be worth much since it has the "Bad luck" sign.

That guy sounds stupid. The bad luck sign is a indication of female. Too bad he doesn't know any better I just hope he doesn't fool anybody else with that one.

I highly doubt you texans are carrying out asian superstitions down there.
Judging by this guys uneducated advice he gave you I doubt his ability to vent a fish, and i still stick with original posting as female.
Slim head, small mouth, longer roundish body, black spot. I could be wrong, but with the pictures provided, all signs point to female. One with potential at that.

If he really told you that, then i would say he know nothing in the flowerhorn world and because of his ignorant i don't believed either that he expert in venting. Lets wait for a little longer to see who is have a right guess. for now i still vote female.

Very pretty FH.

I tried taking pictures of the vent but all of them come out blurry.. I tried 3 days ago and I tried again today, no luck. Crappy camera.. Well a couple weeks ago my FH was 2.5 inches.. Now its 3 inches from nose tip to the beginning of its tail fin.

Also.. That black splotch seems to be spreading.. I was wondering if it was fading, or if it is indeed a dorsal spot.

Black spot is not suppose to spread if its an indication of a female. Only colors like that spread if it's going to fade or peel later on. Just catch it with a net, flip it upside down and take a picture of the vent. Nothing to worry about.

Its going to peel?! Noooooo I don't want a fader :( and I took a ton of pictures of the vent.. but you couldn't see the shape of anything.. My camera sucks.. Got any tips as to how to take a good picture? I tried flash and ISO and moving the camera around in different angles and nothing works.
