Your right, I should have just let him stay in the tank and slowly get chewed to death AND risk my other 2 healthy fish getting sick.
I have no other tank to put him in and the place I purchased the fish would not take him back when I called...what would you have suggested I do? He was SEVERELY chewed up, like nothing I have ever seen (fins, body, etc...) was laying on the surface on the top corner of the tank tipped on his side and was still getting bit by the other green terror. When I saw the huge string of white poop it made up my mind to do what I previously said was VERY hard to do (and hope to never have to do again) I figured it was better than slowly suffering and dieing in the tank and risking the health of my two other fish (that have been perfectly healthy thus far and growing like weeds).
I was not looking for (or even wanting) a breeding pair, I was hoping to grow the two out a bit and see which one ended up being the male.
I take good care of my tanks & fish, and always have... I do 50% water changes twice weekly regardless of nitrate status, I feed a variety of high quality foods and have always immediately addressed any health issues as soon as they come up.
Thanks for your needless criticism and your input on sexing my first fish.
I am going to post a couple pictures of the first fish again without the flash so everyone can see how vibrant the coloring is...I'm curious to see if anyone changes their thoughts after seeing these. Again, all I thought to look for was the longer pointed fins vs. round fins...but sounds like some on here have males that did not develop any pointed fins until later on.
