Please help sexing my Green Terror...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My first thought upon seeing a picture was that the fish was male. I say this because of the body color. It's more colorful (camera flash washes out the color of irridescent fish, but you can see that it is there) than most females. The body color is what stands out most, but I can see why others would say female due to the dull orange caudal band.

Upon looking closer, I thought female mostly because of the body shape, and fin shape of the fish. The fish has a very round appearance, and the fins obviously are short. Mostly the head shape is what looks female. Very slow slope. Look at the second GT in the bag. Obvious hump beginning there.

All that being said, I don't know what your fish is. Definitely one of those that falls within the gray area of sexing methods.

As far as euthanasia - Fish suffer long miserable lives in small tanks, under-filtered tanks, over fed tanks. Sick fish often endure long bouts of medications only to die after weeks of starvation and pain. I wonder if you would make such a fuss if the fish euthanized was a gold fish? I don't see anything wrong with the actions taken by the OP in this particular situation.

UPDATE:

Almost 2 months have gone by since I originally posted. I'm still up in the air on this! Took a couple better pictures (below), one without the flash on (which is slightly blurry) and a couple with the flash. I'm still leaning slightly toward male, colors are so vibrant and I'm noticing the fins are slowly starting to get longer and pointed. Second opinion(s) anyone?

yeah usually i have a good idea when it comes to sexing GTs but this one could be either a nice male that is just slow to growing trailers or a really nice female, im definitely leaning towards male but i think that you will need to vent it to be sure, this is a bit of a tricky one

I'm gonna say male.

I want to say male, based on the new pics. It's the body shape that's throwing me off here though. It's so tall and thick. All of the males I've had in the last 20 years have been more like the second GT you had, long and slender, torpedo shaped ifyou will. All of the females i've had have been shorter and thicker.
I'm throwing out a giess when i say male but the new fin development and nice spangles say male to me.

Thank you for the replies. I'm now wondering about my other recently aquired Green Terror (pictured below) I just picked it up from the LFS and assumed it was a male by the same method (pointed fins)...thoughts???

The fish in my original above post looked similar to this one when I got it, after a few weeks of Hikari Cichlid Gold it's yellow along the edge of the fins turned a vibrant orange and the body color deepened up a bit.

This looks male to me.

I think the pics are misleading. When you look at the scales are they a light blue (like the first pic) or are they dull gold (like the other two)? If light blue then I say male if dull gold then I say female. GTs can be tricky but I seem to be most accurate when I judge by looking at the scale colors..
