thanks a lot polypterus, you have been alot of help:D

do you have a pecific florida/spotted you are interested in?

polypterus pretty much hit the nail on the head. keep smaller ones in smaller tanks and step them up as they grow to avoid spine injury. they are very hardy and will eat just about anything. they also love planted and floating vegitation.

hi demjor19 i dont really have a specific gar that i am intrested in i am just trying to find out if i will be able to keep one before i get my hopes up and find out thqat i cant.

also i was just curious to know how they get spine injury?

from getting spooked and swimming into the tank walls or trying to jump out and hitting the glass tops or what ever really hard

ok but call me stupid, wouldnt it be better in a big tank so that there is less chance of it hitting the side?

i am not saying you are wrong, i dont really know anything about gars so i totaly belive you, that is just my thought .

THANKS!

Gar unlike other species of fish have a special backbone that works in a Peg and socket manner rather than one which is buffered with cartilage between the vertebrae..This makes them very prone to knocking the vertebrae out of position and causing massive spinal cord (notocord if you wish) damage should stress be placed on it. The torpedo shape of these fish and the fins are designed for speed and despite the heavy scales these fish are very flexible and quite fast..

A serious issue with keeping gar in standard aquaria is that they get spooked easy and when they do they hit what is called an 'Uncontrolled fast start' or C start. Often when this occurs the fish will damage the backbone and in doing so may cause un-repairable damage to the spinal cord...

The fix for behavior and to minimize potential issues is to do one of two things
1. which is what most hobbyists can do...Is to step up tank size on a gradual basis to where the fish is not cramped but cannot hit a fast c-start

2. is to keep the fish in a massive species only tank or pond..The issue with doing this is you have a 6 foot by 4 foot tank for a 5 inch fish and feeding can be problematic therefore compromising effective husbandry. This can work but it is not in most to dedicate the time and attention to a giant tank to keep one species of fish at a very tiny size to a larger size.

There was actually detailed information about this in the Link I posted earlier but someone felt the need to change it out of there immaturity....As a note I do not care for someone meddling with my posts without noting that they have done so.. this shows very bad decorum and also sets a very bad precedent...You can just delete the link if it gets your panties in a bunch but you have no right to alter it to say something that was not intended and not note that it was altered from the original.

thanks alot now i understand.

i think lol. as far as can tell since i am only going to have a big indoor pond with other species and nothing really to grow it in (only a spare 4ft dont know if that will be ok please tell me if it will be) if i want one i should get quite a big 1 that can go straight into the pond.

if i am understanding right what size would i need to be able to go into a 640 gallon pond
