I recently purchased some premium live rock from my lfs. Being a newbie I am completely at loss as to what the organisms are on it. If anyone can help with ID's would be greatly appreciated

(sorry about the crappy pics - I didn't realize there was sand dust on the inside until I checked the photos! Tank was just set up)

zooanthids, fans, macroalgae i see alot of a red variant of calupra lots of coraline. but its the stuff on the inside that can make good(lkots of denitratingbacteria) or crap( mantis shrimp and other pesky inverts )

Thanks, I'm pretty much a complete NOOB. If you don't mind me asking - what is what? at a guess the 'button' thingies would be the zooanthids. Would the anemone looking thingies be the fans?

I know there is at least one crab in there, haven't been able to get a good look but he's red & white. I'd estimate approx 1.5cm across. I'm hoping no mantis (though I do know someone who will take them)

yeah the 'button' things witht the little fingers are the zoanthids
the little flat stuff that looks like it's part of the rock, is some kind of rain coral, or maybe micromussa
and a butt load of red macroalge.. i doubt calurpa, but marco none the less...

I asked the lfs where i got the rock from - they have no idea. I have noticed the 'zooanthids' (buttons with fingers) moving around the tank. They are now on a couple of my standard live rock pieces and there are a couple on the glass on the tank (look a bit like slugs with dreadlocks from underneath) Do zooanthids move?

I have now seen at another LFS 'brain coral' which looks a lot like the blue/green little disks without the fingers

It would be nice to see closer pics but it looks to me like you have a bunch of majano anemones on your rock. Do a search for that--you don't want them, if that's what they are.

The bumpy-looking light blue stuff encrusting the rock, looks like some kind of favia. I'd watch that red macro algae, it can take over your tank.

i agree. There are beneficial things on/in the rock, but the macro will pose a problem when and if your tank params dont stay in check. This happened to me when i was curing a bunch of rock in a vat. pretty soon i was forsed to kill all the rock and start over fresh. Good learning experience but also a good one to avoid if you could.

Looks like it is majano, many thanks for that, will have to look at getting rid of them... It's a shame as they look so good on the rock. I'll keep an eye out on the red algae and make sure it stays in place. It seemed to survive the cycle my tank went through when I upgraded ok. Cycle is now done so have started adding some coral frags. I have 2 small zoo and a morph frag plus a small bubble tip anemone I picked up cheap because it was bleached (it's a very attractive white with purple tips, I'm hoping it recovers ok, but I'm kind of liking it's coloration!)
