White with purple tips is not a bubble tip. It's a Condylactis anemone. Even so--you should not be keeping an anemone in a newly established tank. It needs a tank that is at least 6-12 monts old. Especially if it's a bleached bubble tip.

What kind of lighting do you have? I'd concentrate on getting more live rock. How large is the tank & how many lbs do you have in there now?

My LFS has them listed as bubble tips. I got it cheap as it was hiding under a rock in their live rock tank. Will try for a pic tomorrow after lights on. I originally put it on a ledge high up in the tank, it moved to down in the substrate against a rock.

My lighting is lousy. 3x 25w T8's (2x white, 1x blue) It's a 75g all in one tank and modifying it for better lights (even T5HO) would me a major PITA, but is something I would like to try when I can figure out how to cut the inbuilt ballasts out of the hood. As for live rock, I have been adding more in, currently would have around 50 - 60lbs, possibly a bit more (haven't been keeping track)

Lighting upgrade is definitely on the cards when I work out how to butcher the hood.

Pics I took today - anemone and full tank shot. I currently have a bit of an algae problem (the tank cycled when I changed from the 15g to the 75g and has only recently settled down) will need to get a bigger clean up crew. In the full tank shot you can see where the anemone moved to on the sand. It hasn't moved since it parked itself there.

Put the nem at the top of the tank. Looks like a condy--does it have a red foot?

I did put it at the top of the tank. It moved itself to it's current location and stayed there. I haven't tried to move it again, I figured it was satisfied where it parked itself.

It's foot is white also. The only color is it's purple tips

Guess it likes it there then.

that anemone is a purple tip seabae. See them everywere around my hometown. the light is lousy lol. T5 HO is going to be a good way to go. IMO i would remove the hood and get a plug and play kit. Current makes great units for not a ton of money. Per the PAR on these units, you would end up with more then enough light for anemones and most every LPS. Sps would be possible but depending on the build of the unit and number of bulbs, i would suggest only the lowest light needing SPS.

is great for your basic softies and easy keep LPS. One large reflector and a cheaper series of electronic ballast make this a good lighting unit for the reefer who likes a variety of corals but is NOT looking for the hard keeping SPS

(sps must be placed near top of tank for lighting purposes)

http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_ViewI...y~FILTFIT58U~category~48in_Units~vendor~.html is where my money would go. Great lighting unit with great props on reefsanctuary.com. Number of bulbs makes PAR that much better and runs cheaper and cooler then MH in comparable wattage with same effectiveness on SPS. Individual reflectors are used and only downside is I believe a splash lens needs to be purchased seperatly.

Things for you to consider

Thanks for the advice SweeTang, unfortunately removing the hood completely is not an option (the filter system is built in, and I also have very curious cats who jump on everything - and love trying to play with the fish) Cutting the mountings for the 3 individual T8 tubes and cutting out the bulkhead the ballast is in I may be able to fit a 36" 3 tube T5HO setup in there if I am lucky (the tank is only 40" long)

is that one of those all-in-one marineland hoods?? The 2 5's you should be going for then would be VHO, you can get 3 bulb 36" kits with an icecap660 ballast to fit in there, and get similar results as the middle unit i posted above. JB weld works great for attaching plastic to plastic and this would work for filling the gaps lol. The kits will have standoffs, reflectors, wires, water "proof" caps and the ballast. Most unit will not include bulbs. I would get some UVL brand bulbs, 420nm actinic, 12K and 14K would all look very nice. Slight white and good blue, which will make your colors look amazing. Also, the nice thing about the VHO's is they are T8 bulbs with internal reflectors, so modifying may not be needed to greater extents, just change the wiring and ballast around.

www.marinedepot.com will have all you need for the retro kit.
