PLease Think B4 BUYING

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They should make a rule that only endangered species could be sold to those with biology degrees, and could only be sold in pairs. And the people who buy the fish in pairs have to breed their fish and donate two full batches back to where they came from. Only fair

I keep ameca splendens (butterfly splitfins). They're thought to be extinct in the wild.

If we never kept them in our home aquariums, they'd be extinct with no chance of re-introduction.

Something to ponder.

As a fishkeeper, I'm aggressively trying to get a good-sized breeding colony going. As long as they are in someone's tank (and breeding), they'll never be totally extinct from the planet and re-introduction remains a possibility (by scientists only of course)

While protecting our environment is very important to me (I have a Biology degree and have kept fish for most of my life) I do believe that it is fine to keep wild caught fish - provided they are not threatened/endangered. Collecting for the aquarium trade rarely has the huge impact that can come from other sources such as development and pollution. How many million (of some fish species) die each year when trapped in drying out pools? Sustainable fishing (which is possible) can also promote a higher standard of living for individuals in some other countries while allowing them to abandon practices such as slash and burn farming. Those guilty of taking endangered fish do need to be dealt with harshly I feel.

Always know your source!!! For a happy tank you need patience, if you can't find it from someone you trust don't just shop till you find one that's how poachers get sales. If there is no money in it they won't do it!

Plan out the fish and its tankmates.
For example, if one intend to keep small fishes. Research must be done on the max length of the fish which can be kept together, the different fishes nature as well as the type of food that the fishes eat.
Try avoiding to friends recommendation unless you are confident that these fishes can be kept together.
Of course, keeping the legal fish is the best option and knowing your source is important too.

Wanna thank the spam-bot for digging up a very interesting read. As it stands loss of habitat is far more responable for endangered species the the pet trade.
