Pleco feeding on goldfish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thank goodness we have another goldfish enthusiast here, Raychel to help with goldfish queries.

And I doubt singletails are very likely to get attacked by most plecos. Even then, plecos normally will attack and suck the slime coat of slower or even sick tankmates. Not really a common scenario. I've combined bristlenose plecos with goldfish with no issues. Common plecos on the other hand are out of the question especially when tank size is not appropriate for both fish most of the time.

I don't net my goldies, I hold them in my hand to transport....but mine are fancy goldfish, and a lot more clumsy than single-tails!

My husband moved one for me once, and he said they are just like puppies.

The goldfish seem to follow them around, so I would assume if they were hurting them they would try and stay away.

3 gf and 2 unknown plecs in a 55 breeder with 15G worth of drift wood for fish to swim and hide around

I had to net him to pull him up to the "betta" tank to get a closer look

:iagree: I don't absolutely net my fancies with nets at all. They're easily damaged by the nets. Go with bare hands instead. Singletails are indeed a different case.

they are the single tail'd variety...but I believe 2 of the 3 in this tank have ornate tails

also, temps are slightly higher then they should be, but they arnt cooking

i have a comet goldfish which i've had for about 5 years.
when i bought it, it was white. now its gold, with red patches.

hmm well plecos are known to suck the slim coating from goldfsih.
Common Plecos have been known to kill Bullheads and koi by sucking the slime off the fish....the fish usually die from infection caused by stress; finding out what kind of Pleco you have will help as well as a big magnifying lense and fine dipnet to check the scales.

The fish is normal nothing is attacking it.

I have a fish of a different color. Well 2 of them

One is a common goldfish, went from black, yellow, orange, then white.

Other is a oranda, which was bought as a blue oranda. Always wanted one, then one day it slapped me in the face. Its no longer "blue", right now he/she is white body, orange face with orange cap, and the top part of his back is orange with a slight black.

The only goldfish that HAVENT changed on me so far is my black telescope, 7yo calico fantail, and 7yo comet. Its pointless for me to buy a fish that i want, it almost always ends up a color i dont need in the tank!

hmmm... a semi-old thread.

I feel I need to address something here.

Plecos get a bum rap about the sucking thing. I've kept plecos(commons mainly) for over 20 years and have never had one suck the slime on any other fish I've kept.

What causes them to do it is when they are underfed, plecos are fish and deserve to be fed as such. Not left to clean the tank.
