Pleco for 10 gallon tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yep..... I am dumb.... Good one!

I have had pleco's for years and if you feed them discs constantly they will grow huge fast. If you let them do what they do in nature and eat algae they will do just that and grow very slowly. Yea you wont be able to keep them in the tank for 10 years but lets face if most people with a 10 gallon tank will not have it that long anyway..ie they will get out of the hobby or they will upgrade to a bigger tank. they said "cheap".! A common pleco is just that a dime a dozen!

still dont justify that u can put a common pleco in a 10 gal tank.

i agree with sandtiger, adding a pleco or some sort of an algae eater will just raise up the bioload even more, 1st thing u can do is to explain to her the importance of daily water change and then maybe u can suggest adding ottos, chinese algae eater or snails to back up the algae problem in the 10gal tank. ;)

I agree 100%,
water changes and routine maintenance is a must!!!!!
But to jump all over me like that is just ridiculous. A pleco (with routine maintenance) would make the tank stay algae free....and would be cheap....
just like what they are asking for!

I don't agree with purposefully stocking a fish that will outgrow a tank, especially a tank so small. There are much smaller alternatives that can do just as good a job and are also pretty cheap. Rubberlips do a great job cleaning algae IME as do dwarf otos.

buy twelve of them then, only a dime, and are therefore disposable with no worries. its a bit of a misconception they all eat algae, and different species will only eat certain algae forms, and many if fed properly won't necessarily eat algae. Also can you tell me which pleco in nature you think soley survives on algae? If you have to get another fish in there, get a small oto species or a flying fox.

Mine have been alive and healthy for 5 years! I have never fed algae wafers of any type of bottom feeder food and he is doing great! Must be able to live off of it just fine. ? Just saying you know as well as i do that this tank hasn't been cleaned in months do you really think they will still have it in several years when that pleco is "too big" for that tank. I don't think so.

so why buy one in the first place?

also i could feed you nothing but hot dogs for the rest of your "life", you'd prob still be here in 5 years. Plus you have to take into consideration that their diet changes as they mature.

So you're basically saying that because the system in question will fail anyway it's alright to add more fish because they will die before they reach full size? Nice.:screwy:

In a 10 gallon easiest way is to not get a fish to do it but do it yourself with an algae scrubber. Get fish that you like and want to keep. Tank maintanence is part of the hobby.
