Pleco for 10 gallon tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For a tank that small you should look for otocinclus or rubberlip pleco. I do not condone the action of putting a fish like a common pleco in a small tank, they need a minimum of 18" width for life. They are also not an algae eater for life, and should not be fed on purely algae for their entire lives, they do need to be fed.

Mine have been alive and healthy for 5 years! I have never fed algae wafers of any type of bottom feeder food and he is doing great! Must be able to live off of it just fine. ? Just saying you know as well as i do that this tank hasn't been cleaned in months do you really think they will still have it in several years when that pleco is "too big" for that tank. I don't think so.

i don't know mine used to feed off of flake food that he took upside down from the surface so im sure they will eat the food that settles to the bottom of the tank. but yeah, either get then scraping the tank or an oto or FF

I have a 5 year old female bristlenose that is only about 4 inches long. The males are about 5.5 inches long. I think a female bristlenose would be fine for a 10 gallon.... but with goldfish maybe not.

oh I think you need driftwood with plecos too. Maybe bristlenoses don't need it as much as panaque's but my pieces are driftwood are definetly smaller than they were when I bought them.

Welcome to MFK JackDonkey! BN's don't need wood as much as panaques, however they will still benefit from it. However, ancistrus species grow to many different sizes, and most are sold as a simple BN. Some stay as small as 3", some grow to be 10" and some even larger.

I agree, just show her how to scape the front glass, and let it at that.

True. A bad razor is much better than a good plec at cleaning. All of my plecs have suggested to me that I clean the glass myself. They also told me that Saddam is still alive, and Wayne Newton is too. I didn't believe it.

just my two cents why not try a chinese algae eater (im pretty sure the stay small) or a couple of snails if not one large one...no to the common pleco it will overgrow the tank and then they wont know what to do with it.

CAE are not too good of an algae eater, and they grow VERY large, up to 10". They are very aggressive when they get older, and eat nearly no algae at that point.

they'll be good for the first 3 quarters, but i think they'd be a bit big for a fish in that tank which is just for an "algea eater"

Try a Rubber Lip or a Bristlenose, They tend to stay on the smaller side and do a great job of cleaning.

IMHO.....
WHAT i thought rubber lips got like 2feet
