Well explained.Gervahlt;4454194; said:This is why it's your fault. If they've shown aggression for the past year towards each other to the degree that the tank lid has been knocked off several times, you should have re-homed one or the other into another tank, or another home. You also should have checked on them like a responsible fish-caretaker if you heard the tank lid get knocked off in the middle of the night.
As a side note, I understand having an 11" aro in your tank as they have more flexibility than most fish, but didn't you say the aro and the pleco are about the same size? If this is true, your pleco HAS outgrown your tank and it's time to find him a bigger home. Also, I'm sure the close quarters and rapidly diminished living space was the root cause for the aggression shown between these two fish in the first place.

His point however is that you should have figured it out and separate them as soon as possible despite numerous bickerings already. Do not wait for the worst to happen if you are seeing the two fish not getting along. This is often the mistake regretted by several hobbyists who failed in time to prevent the demise of their pets.araderboy;4454405; said:ive read posts on here before from one of the guys that has a crazy large, either 50,000 or 100,000 gallon tank- that an aro has jumped OUT of their tank and died- so i figured it was just in their nature to mess around at the top of the tank.
I just didnt think that the pleco would be able to do so much damage.
it was a hard lesson learned.
flame away.

I don't feel the need to defend myself, but i'll do my best to tell you what happened. For the last year, these guys have been going at it- usually messing with eachother, and competing with one another for shrimp pellets and small feeders (yes, the pleco goes after feeders). The Pleco always wants the Aro's food, and usually pays the price- as the aro was aggressive towards the pleco when it came time to defend his food. The pleco was contantly missing scales, but for the most part- the Aro stayed on top and the Pleco stayed on bottom, and it never seemed like one was stressed out enough to die. After i fed them last night, i noticed the pleco acting very aggresive and using it's tail fin as baseball bat to attack the silver. I heard them knock the lid off the tank while i was asleep (its happened a few times)
this morning i come to find, the aro upside down, at the bottom of the tank, gaping for air- and the pleco was swimming on top of him, sucking on his face, and the aro couldnt get away- he was trying to but the pleco RAMMED him into the glass. i imagine he just rammed him, until the stress nearly killed him.
he had more than enough room to turn around, he was due for a tank upgrade soon- but it wasnt a cramped situation. It was just a pleco and a silver, nothing else.
