I can't figure out what's happening! Noddy, did yours start losing "skin" inbetween it's fins? Mine is like down to the bone in numerous spots. I think he got an infection or something =[

No, mine is actually very healthy .
Are your water parameters in check?
Infections are uaually the result of your water not being as good as it could be...

I wish I would have read this post sooner.... :(

I was house sitting for my friend and her roommate last weekend (taking care of dogs, cats, tanks etc.). When they came back, her rootmate asked me if her 7" plec died and I scooped him out or something because he was not in the tank. I looked....Nope, he wasn't in there. I did a fin count of all the tanks every night and the plec was in the tank not 12 hours earlier.
So we looked under driftewood and stuff.... still no plec. Then I realized that idiot had like a 2 inch gap in the lid that stretched across the length of the tank. Jeez.... So I checked behind the tank..... sure enough we found the crispy critter. Hard as a rock. Poor little fella. Turns out, she also had a crab and a crayfish do the same thing. You think she would have figured out that gap in lid= dead fish. THEN she blames me for her dead fish! Like I taught it to jump out of the tank or something....... idiot.

I wish I had read this post earlier and I would have known that he could be revived. he could have lived, that makes me sad........... well at least if it happens again (not to me, my tanks are secure) I'll know what to do.

Noddy, my parameters are perfect =] It is a lightly stocked tank, and by lightly stocked, I really mean it. Ammonia-1.5 Just kidding lol, it's at 0, Just wanted to get a good laugh lol) Nitrite-0, and Nitrate is at about 5 ppm. And I'm actually about to do a water change. I've been doing daily 10-25% Water changes, and the temperature is at roughly 82 degrees. Sometimes it drops to 81, but it's always above 80, below 84. I don't know what is causing it. Maybe his slime coat got messed up by being outside of the tank... Well actually that's pretty obvious. But I have a feeling it's one of my other fish. I removed the pleco from this tank just in case it is an infection (Don't worry, the new tank has a lid...Lol) And I'm not going to blame anyone...But I think it's my Exodon's. I have 2 as of right now. We'll see if his fins stop "disappearing" while he's in the other tank. Oh and in case anyone needs to know about my filtration and water changes (Some of which was stated above), I do daily 10-25% water changes to encourage growth, and I have 2 aquaclear 50's, 2 30's, and a 70 that I only run every other day to polish the water off. I also have a sponge filter, and an airstone inside the tank running 24/7. If you guys need any more info, feel free to ask =]

And Bue, I'm sorry to hear that =[ You are not to blame for that fish's death, the owner should have sealed the lid's correctly. I wish you had read this earlier too, and that's why I'm trying to keep this thread going for awhile to make sure people realize that it's always worth a shot!

Morning Bump. I'll try to pull a video up or some photos later

I think your maintenance is very good!
That can't be the problem.
I just read that a bacterial infection may be iminent after the pleco's slimecoat is damaged.
The article states that one way of treating the wounds, is getting the pleco out of the water, drying the wounds with cottonwool and applying a human-grade ointment, preferably water-soluble, used against eye- and mouth infections.
In case of a serious bacterial infection , use use of antibiotics is nescecary.
Nifurpirinol is mentioned as antibiotic.
Mind you I got NO experience with fish-meds, so please investigate more.
The article is in Ingo Seidel's Back to nature guide to L-number plecos.

It might be fin rot. A lot of times fin rot is due to bad water perams but I think they can get it after an injury and stress too. Post some pics of it. Until you get it diagnosed you might want to just treat with melafix. This would help his fin heal better and stop any fin rot. I let this go on one of my catfish before because I didn't know what was wrong (newb mistake) and my catfish got really bad really fast. Better safe than sorry in my opinion. Plus melafix is natural so it's not like your dosing your tank with unnecessary meds. Just remember to take out any carbon before you treat with that, if that is what you decide to do. Also I would consitered keeping him isolated until he heals if I were you. Or at least until you know whats going on with his fins. If your having a hard time figureing it out you might want to repost things in the fish disease section. There are many people in there who are much more knowledgeable than me.

Haha, I'm glad I made you laugh Noddy! I love that picture! And yeah, it's definately not my water parameters. I'll look into what you were saying about bacterial infections and using a human grade ointment.

And Hydrogrrl, I didn't think he was going to make it either!

Thanks Lissaspence, I don't have any carbon on my filters so meds will be fine, I only use it to polish my water or if I want to get "old" meds out. I'll try to get a picture up as soon as possible!

Thanks for the info everyone! I'll keep researching...And crossing my fingers!
