pleco wafers?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I also avoid Hikari McWafers. HBH does fall apart, but it works for me because all the fish I have are aggressive eaters. I have no tolerance for picky fish, and my L200, striped raphael colony and Oscar have no problem ingesting any food within seconds.

So, HBH is my main wafer.

There is actually another type of walfer out there that is better.. but it creates a huge mess...

Aquarian Sinking Algae... they have a rich grassy smell to them.. much more so than Hikari... however.. the pop from these walfer float.. so sometimes i see huge pleco pop drifting in the tank..

But otherwise.. they are just as good as hikari and is much cheaper..

No wonder they are cheaper Algae shows up on the ingredients list for the first time as item # 11!!! Wow, you actually feed that crap to your fish? Dicacium phosphate (a preservative) is present in larger quantities than the algae is!!!

Ingredients: Fish meal, wheat flour, ground rough rice, wheat bran, wheat germ meal, soybean meal, dicalcium phosphate, canola oil, krill meal, dehydrated alfalfa meal, spirulina algae meal, chlorella algae meal, brewers dried yeast, dried kelp, vitamins and minerals

Fish meal, wheat flour, ground rough rice, wheat bran, wheat germ meal, soybean meal, dicalcium phosphate, canola oil, krill meal,
It takes nine ingredients to get to the first one that is actually a food for fish. They might make good plant fertilizer, but that's not a fish food.

I use this:

But I have honestly never even looked at the ingredients, but it's basically the only brand any of my lfs sell in decent sized quantities, and my pleco looks very healthy to me (there are pics of it in my albums). Also, it stays solid for quite a while.

"Almost natural tropical fish foods" is good stuff, but expensive. Their web site was hacked though and is down for a while so I can't get the ingredients list for you.

Much cheaper and well liked by my fish are these made by Angel's plus.

They are a LARGE wafer in a nifty little leaf shape. One of these is about 4 of the standard Hikari wafers.

I can put 50+ of them in the tank at a time and rarely have one left over 5 min later. I am feeding them to both Pacu and plecos.

In the tank with out pacu I have both a pleco and tilapia that eat them, again its rare to see one left in there for more than 5 min. I have never seen one break down completely. They swell up and get spongie on the edges, but I have never seen one actually break apart into mush.

I am really fussy about fish foods, but I have to balance that against the two empty garbage cans I call pacu. They are bottomless pits and if all I fed them was the really good stuff I would loose my home. I feed about 2 Lbs a month of those little leafs to the two tanks. I think its a really good compromise on quality and price.

I feed Hikari algae wafers and the smaller Hikari sinking wafers. I also sprinkle in NLS sinking Thera A and Hikari sinking carnivore. These are supplemented with market shrimp and frozen bloodworms. Also throw in a zuchini or two every week.Of course, they have driftwood to chew on as well.

Just ordered the NLS algae wafer, gonna try it out. Tried to get the Sera catfish chips but they are on backorder. Anyone try these? I may try those other foods recommended.

It seems to me variety is better.....
