Pleco with Fin Rot...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Big al pets has the aquaclear 70 replacement sponges for like 2 bucks each right now. 4 if them would work perfect. Some of the best sponges for fliter I have gotten my hands on and never have to be replaced. I have 5 AQ 110 sponges in my sump and I only have to clean them about every 2.5 months

Also my readings today are as follows...
Temp = 80
Ph = 8.4
Alkalinity = 120
Chlorine = 0
Hardness = 75
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = 60

So much better than Saturday. I did order the freshwater master test kit. It's not here yet. Where I live to get to a decent fish supply store is a 3 hour round trip. There's a small one about a half hour from my house I was there Monday they do not carry the test kit or canister filters. The biggest filter they carry is the bio wheel 360, which I have 2 of.

I cycled another 60 gallons today. Pleco still looks the same. Not worse or better. Everyone else is still the same.
I ordered an FX4 canister filter. Should be here next Thursday, any recommendations on what sponges or other things to put into the filter other than what it's coming with????

Purigen for chemical filtration will give you crystal clear water. And biohome ultimate media is what I personally use in my sump, kind of expensive and you have to order from Great Wave engineering. Some might say it's a not necessary but I had have good results with it.

I received my master kit today!!!! New readings are..
Temp 80
Ph 7.4
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 5.0 ppm
:) I'm happy with that.. would like the ph higher for my chichlids. But this kit is pretty sweet! Thanks!!!

Glad you got it! Much more accurate than strips. Don't worry about pH. Having a consistent pH is far more important than some "perfect" numbers. What ever your tap water is at is what you want.

If I'm not mistaken they are of Central and south America. Which like softer water so a 7.4 pH would be fine.

Don't worry about ph. These are all South/central American. They prefer soft acidic water a 7.4 is close enough and well with in the range they need to be in.

So I got my fx4 yesterday, set it up last night it's working great. However I discovered a couple days ago my issue my not have been fin rot, it's ICH.. today is day 4 of my treatment... I did not place the carbon in the fx4, raised temp to 85, have multiple airstones going. An I have been trying my best to do a 60 gallon cycle daily. I was worried most of my featherfin catfish with raising the heat by they seem to be doing just fine. I am using herbtana for ICH treatment it is safe for scaleless fish.. also keeping the lights off except when I feed them..

I am definitely getting a 10 gallon quarantine tank when I get new fish now. I have 2 10 gallons an a 45 in my garage but they all leak. Where I live in the sticks the closest glass place is about 35 minutes away an they won't fix tanks...
