Plecos Bite!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I like it when my pleco bites my hand. It's his way of saying
GET THE *&%* AWAY FROM ME YOU STEWPID EEDIOT!

I handle most of my plecos on a regular basis, or did anyway. I have been rasped and sucked on numerous times. The Leporacanthicus species all have quite a set on them, but never have I felt any of the plecs suck hard enough to hurt or even sting.

I love the feeling of a pleco grazing on my hand. It's so weird and wonderful (sigh).
I will never hold one by the head with my thumb & forefinger out of water though.
Such a loss of dignity for the poor fish!:swear:

I hold mine mostly open palm or across the fingers. I have seen and heard too often of people not knowing how to hold plecs holding the head, thumb and forefinger, and the plec thrashes and goes flying or worse the person reacts and tries to hold tighter.

Agreed! Pleks need their dignity! Ever notice that a pleco looks like a dart when you hold it like a dart?
Could you even tell the difference between a whiptail and a dart?

I could tell the difference between my whiptail and a dart. He will not lay in my hand at all.

i've heard of people doing damage to them by gripping to tightly, but then its ok if you do it properly. some plecs that can cut you on the sides due to spikes is one reason they are held by the head. that and you can secure them, and get a reasonably good pic of the whole plec
