For what its worth before I was warned about plecos feasting on slime coat I kept polys and plecos together w/o a problem. HOWEVER I no longer take that risk now that I know......

My suggestion would be to get a syndontis catfish because they eat algae and won't suck the polys slime coat off

synos have been known to suck on slime coats also. i'm not even sure if they algae cause mine never did.

personally, i wouldn't put either a syno or pleco in my bichir tank. not really worth the risk IMO.

Keep the pleco well fed and you will never need to worry about them going after the slime coat.

yea well see just want a cool plec to finish of my tank really want a big guy
can always move the poly if it comes to it

most plecos discover the tasty slime on bichirs sooner or later big plecos like sail fins will not only take of slime coats but can even remove scales you could try it but remove the pleco at the first sign of it eating there slim

Also synos and certain other catfish will do the same not as distructive as plecos but can still harm

I agree. Not worth the risk.

A few years ago, I had a huge one, well fed and everything. Still harrassed my 16 inch goldfish. Tried to suck on her as well as the other one Goldfish, especially at night after tank lights were out.

I would be in bed reading next to my tank, and I'd look over and see them trying to shake it off.

At first I didn't know what was going on. But when I found out the pleco had to be rehomed.

It's always worth the risk. You have to keep in mind that as long as the pleco is properly nourished it will not look for nutrition feeding on other fish.

It is always also ill advised to put any fish with a flat broad side such as discus and goldfish with plecos as they will tend to mistake the fish for plants or tank walls.

Keep in mind also... the bichirs are nocturnal scavangers and will do most of their food searching the same time the pleco will. So less likely that it will be fed on.

not exactly. once they finish off the food, they really won't be doing much food searching for the rest of the night, unless one feeds feeder fish or other live food, and they try to hunt at night. its true though some individuals may become more active at night, but certainly not all of them.

also, it would seem bichirs aren't very good at shaking off the plecos when it latches on, given how many people have had this problem. and the fact that bichirs aren't the type of fish that are constantly swimming around means at most they'll try to escape the pleco by moving from one spot to another, but the pleco can easily follow it if it so desires.
