actually i'm gonna venture to say none of us hobbyists really know which specific river/lake our bichirs come from, unless you have the connection and can track down that info from the exporter/collector. those of us that know the locale of our bichir, all we know is the country of origin, and in your case, that'd be guinea.

anyway, thats an big and awesome looking endli! like its dark color. do you think if its because of stress or what?

thanks man.

i'm not too sure either. the endi still maintaining its dark color even in my tank for a couple of days. i do hope it gets lighter in color

i forgot to add that there are special cases sometimes. e.g. the sp. Koliba (could be a lapradei variant, or not) would be from the Koliba River in Guinea. So in those cases, the collection location is specifically used as part of the name to ID the fish. But most of the time, we only know the country of origin.

now i understand more :)

so countries or even more specific, river names can be used as a branding tool rather than to describe the different features of bichirs from individual river/lake origins?

yes and no. in most cases there are some different features (patterns or body/head structure) between the different locales, sometimes very noticeble, sometimes hard to tell.

we really only see specific locale (country or river/lake etc.) labeled (as a branding tool) for P. endlicheri endlicheri and P. bichir lapradei.

the difference between the regular (nigeria) lap and guinea lap is very obvious from the patterns, even though the head/body structure appears the same.

as for endli, they all have vertical stripes regardless of where they're from, and theres decent variation even within the same batch. But what are different between the different locales are the head/body structure and/or contrast. e.g. endlis from guinea and chad typically have the best contrast, and guinea endli sometimes have very flat head. endlis from the volta river usually have very faint stripes, but the head is taller and 'squarer'.

1st pic is a guinea endli from a japanese site.
2nd pic is my endli from south volta.

just to add, the base color of the south volta endli is actually different from those from north volta, from what i was told, which is usually brownish.

Bro

Can you go to my thread 'Some of my endies' and let me know the origin of those endies that I feature there? From your pix, looks like most of mine are from the Guinea region.

Let me know please. Thanks in advance.

i'll try, but at best they'll be educated guesses. i've seen pics of the different variants, but only kept a couple. what anne said before is true to an extent, unless certain feature is very obvious, or if the info is passed along from the collectors, it can be quite difficult to tell, unless you're an importer and have seen a lot of them.

Pal

Thanks. What you said is very true. Its really not possible to be sure which river the endy came from. Most endies are farm bred these days hence maybe it is not possible to tell the origin anymore after all these generations :grinno:.
