Plumbing my sump HELP?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
nonstophoops believes I need a 2" return with the supreme classic 18 pump.

I have a bushing to take the 3/4" return to a 1" pvc pipe just want to do it right the first time.

The overflow is ready to hook up to the ADHI45

Did not know he is doing a 200g+ tank. The. Yes ofcourse 1" won't work. 2" is good.

I did not use primer what I did was put a layer inside the other end of the PVC and jam it in there and turn it counter clockwise and worked. No leaks or w.e.

I use my ball valve for maintnence. I turn both ball valve an pump off. That water level is left like it is. Then I clean out the bottom of the sump like all the build up and fill it with fresh water for w/c. And I don't have a ball valve on my return pump line only on the intake. Also I recommend the back flow preventer because I'm sure he will have the water line sumbmerged unless he likes to hear the noise of water shooting into the tank At 1200gph

How do you drain your sump Mine will be a 45 gallon and it is in the stand once I install it it will be practically impossible to remove it from the stand. Or do you just siphon all the water out?

I have a utility pump that attaches to a garden hose, it makes water changes perfect. I have a 20g sump so with the baffles in place id say 15gs and i would just empty the hole thing and mix 15gs and just pump it back into the sump and let magic do the rest. you could buy a extra pump like from homedepot or lowes and use it to mix salt/ water changes. must have i should say. I dont think siphon would work very well because of the angle cause my sump is pretty much on the ground and my 32g trash can is about 2 1/2 feet tall so gravity isnt an option for me.

I like the way you do water changes. Keeps the sump clean of debris and makes water changes easy.

I would look to occasionally siphon the inside of the tank if possible depending on the substrate you have.

Don't need to move the sump Ace. For siphoning the water out of the sump you could either do the above with an extra pump or even simpler just buy a Python siphon hose that connects to your sink. It makes water changes a snap and eliminates the gravity problem.

Yeah nonstops right about substrate, I was using crushed coral for awhile and I switched to black sand looks very nice. What are you going to keep? Have you gotten your water cycled. Live rock. Substrate, etc. That info would be nice. Are you going reef or fowlr?

1" aragonite base 120 + lbs live rock in tank are small spotted grouper large Domino Damsel and a small Undulated trigger. Thursday I will add a med Blue Jaw trigger from Quarantine to the main tank just tired of the phosphates from the canister and hoping the sump refuguim will help dramatically

Once my sump is up and running, I plan on pumping out sediment from it once a month, at the very least.

I just find that gravel vacuuming is a big part of my tanks clean conditions, and I cant not do that, so sump cleaning will be on a "as needed" basis...or at least once a month with a small pump/powerhead.

How long are you keeping fish in QT? I thought you just pulled your damsel out of QT last week?

Seems to me you are stocking the tank a bit fast and you aren't truly quarantining. I would quarantine fish for a bare minimum of 2 weeks, otherwise there isn't much good to quarantining at all. Parasites like ich won't show in a QT tank immediately depending on where they are in the there cycle. So you are risking it by moving faster.

the Undulated i kept in there a week and the blue Jaw will be close to 2 weeks when I put him in the Main Tank I guess i thought 1 week was long enough I will wait at least two from now on thank you for the advice.
