Plywood or no plywood

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, my back right edge has 1/16 gap right now and it runs about a foot along the back getting smaller as it goes. Don't know what to do. Really don't wanton start tearing my stand apart at this point. Shimming under the plywood might be my only option. Starting to regret building my own stand atm

You can put the caulk under the plywood instead. Tiny shims just don't work well.
The plywood isn't necessary for most glass tanks, but it does stiffen the stand, so worth the cost and effort.

I'm preparing to set up a 125 on a varnished wood stand, on a masonry hearth.

The stand will be flat-sanded by hand, so the tank will set OK, but I will bed the stand to the masonry with grout.

That's the only way to get 100% contact to a rough surface. Also it will never move in an earthquake.

On my first stand I used Wood Dough to level the dips, and hand sanded it. It's still going 30 years later, with a newer tank.
It's the tank on the right of these three.

The stand on the left I built, block-sanded as described. (It's actually made for a plastic 75 I just bought.)
The middle stand is just a cheap hardwood bookcase, and that 16g tank was causing it to warp.
I put it on a different stand pronto.

Maybe tomorrow I'll get some wood dough and try to fill and sand the corner that is low. Lol though I was getting near the end of the build.

I would use DAP 20 minute door and window sealant. $4 a tube and one is enough.
Put a good bead on the stand, then set the tank, wipe the edge, and let it dry. No sanding.
Your tank won't move unless you move it.

Hope it's not going to be to difficult due to it being on a corner, so the dough will have to hold a corner up. Is dap wood filler what you were talking about?

U don't think I should put the filler under the plywood? Then sand it. Plywood isn't screwed down yet. Just have tank sitting on it. Wanted to test fit before I screwed it down

Yes Wood Dough and Dap wood filler are ~ equal . . . and mine is in a corner. A low corner is just typical.

I set that big tank stand to the tile floor with Dap Door and Window sealant. Drys fast and holds fast. lasts forever indoors.
Easy to use and cheap.

I wonder if I fill with dap under the plywood once I screw into it when screwing plywood down it might crack the filler, would you put filler under plywood or under tank or I could do both
