Plywood tank build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Started to build my canopy yesterday. Picked up some 1x6's at the hardware store and took them over to my dad's and cut them up on his radial arm saw.

Basically what I've done built a 50" x 26" box with some left over 1/2" plywood for the top. It will have a hinged lid with a 48" light fixture inside. I've started an album if anyone wants to see my progress so far. As of right now all the pieces are finished and I'm just waiting for the coat of primer paint to dry so I can assemble it and take a finished photo.

Deciding on a sealer for the aquarium has been a pretty big challenge. There is nothing local, I live in a small city, and any of the retailers want a ridiculous amount to order something in for me. So online I've looked at just about every possible option and have found a U.S. company I can order Pond Shield from for about $80.00 including shipping. I'm lucky in the fact that I live on the border and have a U.S. post office box I can ship to. If anyone has a better solution I'd like to know as tomorrow is payday so I'll be ordering it then.

the end windows look like they'd be more of a hastle then they're worth IMO
otherwise, this is a great looking build for sure!!! it's going to look professional when its done.

whats the glass thickness, and price?

I love this build! Keeps bringing me back to wanting to build a tank for myself.

Yea the little windows have been a pain from the beginning. Originally I was going to put plywood in them and just keep the frame effect but the more I thought about it the more I knew that if I did that I would always wish I had of put glass there. My viewing area is 22" tall and the center window is 48" long so according to the calculator I can get away with 3/8". This tank is solid I'm not too concerned about bowing and I know I can order 3/8" plate for $15.00 a sq foot locally so I'm guessing I'll be looking somewhere around 300.00 for the glass. Supposedly this place orders all the thicker glasses to custom size so there's no extra fees for cutting. When it comes time to order I may, depending on the price difference, consider 1/2" for the center window.

Just started watching the thread. This looks like it will be beautiful when its done. One day I will have to talk the better half into letting me build a bigger tank. That's a while off seeing as how i just got bit by the bug and am still trying to master my 55G community tank
