PLZ help my dying fish....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When i moved, i actually transferred the fish into a cooler with an aerator, and used the water from the tank, and left what water that was in the tank, in the tank. So yes, when i moved, i did actually save about 50% of the water, believe it or not.

You guys really think this is a bio load issue? Should I add another filter, or even get a small cannister filter?

Am i the only person who has high ph levels coming out of the tap? Will the bacteria in the tank remove the trace amounts of ammonia in the tap water?

I have also tested my tap water at 8.4 but it has also been as low as 7.8; my fish are doing fine. Since your pH is off the bottom of the scale, you do not want to do a large water change because the sudden pH change could be deadly to your fish. The high ammonia level is also deadly to them. Since the tank is at 6+, the trace amounts of ammonia are the least of your worries.

I just measured my white bio-pad (keepers from a walmart returned filter). It supplements a bio-wheel in a Pengiun150. It measures in inches .5x4x5.5 .

Now as a reference, many people with a 100 gallon tank would use a 20 gallon tank for their filter. This works out to 2 gallons of filter per ten gallons of tank. In your case, you would use a four gallon container for filtration.

The white filter pad works out to (.5/12)x(4/12)x(5.5/12)=.0064 ft^3

There are 7.5 gallons per cubic foot so that gives you .048 gallons of filter volume. To put it into proportion, a person with an advanced equipment setup typically has 209 times more filter space than what Walmart thinks we need.

Get a filter with a bio-wheel. Your fish will love you for it.

yes bro if u have the resource, add another filter. use the other one for mechanical filtration and the bigger one for biological filtration.

Over Filtering is one of the key to keep a small aquarium stable.

Mabye a stupid question, but how do i make one mechanical and one biological, the filter already does both?

I purchased a Penguin 200 about 2 1/2 months ago for my 50 gal, best thing I ever did for the fish. After running it with the old filter for a month, I took the old filter out. Water tests have been exelent since. Its nice and quiet too. :D
