So i came home from college for winter break and brought my lovely fish with me, their new home is pretty small, but will have to work unil i get back to the bigger one in the dorms. I currently have 2 oscars bout 5 in and a 4 in dempsey as well as a pleco in a 30 gal tank XD...... now in college they had an under gravel filter and the water was always clean and never smelled. The tank i have at home only has about an inch maybe less of gravel and no ugf, i need to change the water every other day it gits soo brown and smells so bad.

Is it dirty because their isnt enough gravel? any ideas would be appreciated.

thank you,
mike

- tank too small
- too many fish
- introd too many fish at the same time
- ugf sucks
- no filtration
- % water change? new tank with new water from the tap?
- cycling? parameters?

It's dirty because of all the big dirty fish you have in it.

Oscars and plecos are some of the messiest fish there are. They produce a lot of waste. Even the way Oscars eat is messy, and plecos seem to be poop machines. :)

The amount of gravel has nothing to do with it; I wouldn't even put gravel in that tank, it will make it easier to clean the poop off the bottom. Also, was the 30 gallon cycled? Whatever filter you have on it is overloaded right now, I could almost guarantee it. It will take some time for the filter bacteria to "catch up" with the waste the fish are putting out.

I would just keep changing the water, daily. It's the only way right now to keep the water quality up.

BTW, what size tank do they live it at home?

yes those fish in that small tnk gets dirty fast, espcially if its uncycld and no filtration. I stuck a guppy in a 10g once that wasnt cycled once and the water got murky i cant imagine all those messy boys . and i agree if anything lose the gravel.

TOO MANY FISH, in that tank, the bio load is tremenduous. Not saying it cant be done but you would need a 100 gal sump. Sorry to be stick in the mud, but those oscars alone are pigs. I know of very few ways to fix that problem.

Youll need to do daily waterchanges, maybe more till you get them back to the other tank. The tank you left at school,is it running? If not youll have more problems there as you put the fish into another uncycled tank.
You really need a 125g with good filtration for the # of fish you have.

I know a simple way of fixing the problem.......give the fish to someone who can properly house them.

like i said this is TEMPORARY and there was no way around it..... it has a hob filter that rins on both sides of the "tube sucking the crap" and i change the water daily which seems to stress them out. i had the tank running for a day before i brought them in... i also have another 30 gallon holding an 11 inch oscar and 11 inch pleco.. this is my dads, also temporary for the month of break.. would my fish be ok in there with him? his is a very lazy big oscar, prbly cause he doesnt have enough room to swim, but temporary none the less.
