Poly For A Community?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have two senegals about eight inches long. One I got from a customer at 4-5 inches because it ate everything in his community tank. Probably won't work.

Eels like to hide in confinced spaces, bichirs will 'relax' in a hiding spot for a while, but also enjoy open swimming spaces, which is how I model my polypterus tanks.

Bichirs get very uncomfortable in confined spaces and will getfrustrated and try to jump out of a tank.

:iagree:

Min tank for a bichir that max out 10-12 inches is 55g
Min tank for a bichir that max out 13-15 inches is 75g
Min tank for a bichir that max out 16-19 inches is 125g
Min tank for a bichir that max out 20-25+ inches is 180g

The bigger the tank, the better your fish will set comfortably. Plus it won't get stunted.

bichir is also the scientific name for two polypterus:

Polypterus bichir bichir and Polypterus bichir lapradei

However bichir is a easy nickname for all the species of the polypterus genus, the same way there is only one true 'plecostomus' yet almost all fish in the loriicardiae family are refered to as 'plecos'.

Read through Anne's primer, and browse some old threads in this forum, there's a lot to learn :)
