Polypterus Brackish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks everybody. People write so much bs online so it's hard to get the facts sometimes. Bichirs are such hardy and versatile fish, like previous mention, people get they're wires crossed. It's always better to ask those with experience.

Has anyone had any experience keeping a polypterus in a brackish environment? I've read that many do live in brackish water and before I move them I wanted to check with someone experienced. I have an Ornate, a Senegal, and a Delhezi. Advice please

Only the ropefish are known to venture in brackish environment. Bichirs cant do well in brackish water.

No problem. But datnoids aren't brackish either. lol
Dats are actually brackish water fish but most of us keep them in fully fresh water as they can do well. Silver datnoid would need brackish water as it grows and they grow faster in brackish water as well.

Hi.
Lake Turkana is slightly brackish.
I have kept a Turkana PBB and Chad PBB in slightly brackish waters with no problems.
Infact, the Turkana PBB seemed more vibrant, and a lot more active in this water.
I was advised to do so from Kenta from Big-in (who imports many fish from Lake Turkana).

About 12 years ago when researching bichirs I found a report of an ornate found about 2km off the cost of Africa in the open ocean. Not sure if he ever made it back, but it appears that they occasionally venture out where they probably shouldn't. Back then some people took it as proof that they were brackish, instead of what it probably was, a fish desperately trying to find the river again.

Does the Nile river flow into an ocean?

All my tanks are actually slightly brackish as I always place marine salt to prevent bacterial infection, faster scales, skin and mocus membrane recovery as well. Also the electrolytes from the salt actually makes the fish color even more vibrant. SG at 1.002-1.003, but any lower than SG. 1.005 are not considered as fully brackish. However I have a fully brackish water where I place my bamboo sharks. SG. at 1.008-1.010. I know they need high SG but the bamboo sharks are doing well and eating even now. So I wanted to add some endli, lap, koliba, ornate, congi and ansorgii in and I slowly acclimate them to higher SG. However they all stop eating at SG. 1.006 and at SG. 1.008 they died belly up with gills and mouth wide open. It was the ornate and congi that managed to survived during the process of acclimating. I did not go any higher as both ornate and congi could died too. None of the bichir ever added to the shark tank.

So I'm guessing that ornates, congis, pbb and ropefish are few of the bichirs that can tolerate brackish water. Was wondering what was the SG range when u place ur pbb in brackish water? Never did tried pbb as too expensive for experiment. However if they can then I'm continue experiment project polypterus brackish #2 with pbb, ornate and congi.

lol you put bichirs with bamboo sharks? That's a pretty nifty combo!
