I'm planning on picking up some new polys from JA, any other exp owners see a problem occurring? They will all be sized appropriately

Already have an Ornate
Planning on adding any of these (not all of them, only a couple from the list)
-retropinnis
-weeksi
-Lapreidi
-palmas beutokoferri
-palmas polli
-teuglesi
-lap. Dabola or Farana ( really loving the difference in design on those from reg. Laps, if budget provides I'll definitely be getting one of the 2)

I have a 55 ga, w/ only an ornate, and red hi fin wolf fish (there is mixed feeling comming these guys w/ bichir, but so far has been the one getting nipped not the ornate) how many more do you think will fit comfortably? I do plan on upgrading tanks around Xmas and starting a ornate breeding project in the 55, so the ornate won't be in there forever. I really like those rare sp. JA seems to be the only one who gets them.. anyone have any other good poly online sites? I really can't find much online other then dels, ornates, sens, and one site has weeksi and retro but never in stock.

Locally the poly scene is nothing (as far as I've found at least) w/ nothing but dels, endls, sens, albinos, ornates and I would like to go for something more uncommon

Actually no other poly will fit comfortably in the tank other than a senegalus. The ornate is actually way too big for it. An ornate breeding project wouldn't be a good idea in there either. What would you be upgrading to? Also Dabola is another species of bichir (not described yet, but hobbyist know it)

Oh really? I was told by aquascape that 55 was fine for an ornate and a couple other polys. Damn it. As for the dabola, JA has it listed as a lap var. So that's what I figured. I'm going to either build my own 200 ga or purchase a used 125-175 (I'll take one of any size in that range), so I will be able to house the others in a few months.

Also was told by a couple diff people on a different fish forum that a 55 would be fine for a breeding pair of ornates, so I'll just use the 55 as a specie tank, preferable a group of golden wolf fish (I've put thought into the previous plans falling through).

So when I do get the upgrade how many more can comfortably fit? And I thought most palmas var.s only get about as large as a sen? Again based off info at the LFS.

Any polys shouldn't be kept with others? (With the obvious exception of size related predation, I get appropriately sized fish)

the reason they put sp. is because the species isn't recognized as it's own species to the scientist/whoever studies them. However we have enough readily available in the hobby to who that they are a different species altogether (at least thats what i've been told). Anyway the dimensions of the standard 55 (thats what i'm assuming you have) have a 12 1/2 inches width ornates have the capability to get past 20" most of them pass that 12" mark though and even if they don't they are very close to it. So it'd be very hard for them to turn in the tank. As far as your future stock it really depends on what size you upgrade to there is a big difference from a 125 to a 200 so ima give you my thoughts assuming you get a 125. I'd stay with the upper jaws. I'd suggest pretty much every upper jaw depending on the dimension. The palmas complex (palmas polli, palmas palmas, and palmas buettikoferi) get (most of the time) 2-5" give or take a few larger than senegalus.

I just measured my tank, it is 18 inches wide. I did buy this used and it is a guess that it is a 55, it may be a 60 or 65. I'm going to calculate the gallons once I get back home, it does look a little larger then my friends brand new 55, but I attributed that to mine has wooden paneling on the top n bottom and his is black (black makes things look smaller).

Ok the dabola is the only lower jaw I've ever considered getting, I prefer upper jaws so that works out. especially pollis and beauts. My ornate is only 7 in. as of now, so he should be fine in the 55 until the upgrade. I may upgrade sooner then xmas if I can find a good enough of a deal. I will for sure be upgrading, for sure for sure, because I'm getting surgery in january and I'm going to be recovering for 2 years, so my fish are basically going to be life lol. especially in the crappy buffalo winters.

so based on your advice Dr.B ill go for only palmas complexs, and weeksii or teugelsi, save the dabola and lower jaw specie for when this stock either dies off (hopefully won't be for like 20 years). how many should go in a 125 w/o the bioload being overloaded? I can base if I get a bigger tank off that number

it really depends on the dimensions of the 125 but i'd say 7-8 if you leave off the weeksii and teugelsi since they both get past 20"+ (however weeksii take forever to grow)

okay that's more then I was expecting so that's cool, I would like to get one of each of the upper jaws, but will probably leave out the teugelsi due to that length. Probably put a retropinnis instead. if I do get weeksii (my buddy in the city is attempting to breed them, no luck yet) it would be a baby that I would have to use my other tanks to grow out so it would be okay for quite while it seems. I have also been told that once they get around 8 to 10 inches they start growing really slow, polypterus in general. w/ my tank dimensions being 18 inches wide 4 feet long, does that make it so I can add another now comfortably?
