picking up a Polypterus endlicheri later today and I have some quick questions:

1) What's the growth rate like for these guys?
2) How aggressive and predatory are they?
4) How will he do with my ornate which is nearing 2 years old and about 10"? the endli is coming in at 4-5 inches.
3) any cool stories or experiences you'd like to share or warn me about?

Endlis can choke down a tank mate w/ the best of em, my buddy had his 5 incher eat a 3 inch arcara threadfin. The endli looked like it was about to burst and didn't eat more for weeks. So be careful w/ fish you think he may be able to eat, he probably will

A good growth rate would be about an inch a month, I would put a divider in just in case Ornates are one of the bichir most likely to cannabilize others. Mine at 6 inch ate a 4 inch Senegal. Partially why I sold him.

They arent very aggressive, ive heard bichirs can get aggressive to each other if there arent enough hiding spots, vice versa they do fine w/o any caves or the like.

I have 0 aggression with mine.

Endli's can grow very quick given the proper diet and regular WC. He might ourtgrow your ornate in no time. I dont have a cool story to share but an old pic instead as you can see buries himself and waits for a fish to come by and attack.

+1 if you don't keep them well fed, they will eat anything they think can fit in their mouths. I also had an endli choke down a sen. My he endli was 8" and the sen was 5".

With aggressiveness, it depends on the individuals themselves. I only have 1 hiding spot for all my endli's and they share it pretty well and don't pick on eachother. If you wanna make fast growth, make sure to do plenty of wc's.

thanks for the responses!!! ok well I picked him up and he looks amazing! so excited. But here is the setup up. I currently have him in a 75 gallon tank. He is about 3" long with some 1-1.5 inch peacock bass. I'm worried he might eat the bass so I'm going to put him a 20 gallon tank by himself tomorrow. thought on this? there are also two 4-5 inch striped rapheal catfish in the tank.

It definitely would've gone after those bass as it grew. Smart choice. The 20g is fine for it right now and you don't have to worry about the Raphael's. Post some pics when you can.

Eh, what sort of bass are they? They'll grow faster then the endli for sure so you won't have to separate them for too long. I actually hate my Raphael w/ any of my bichirs. At night when it comes out to scavenge leftovers it flies around the tank banging into the bichirs. If its a lot bigger then the endli and they act like mine id be afraid of the Raphael killing it by banging into it.

My orino (considered one of the slowest growing pbass)

In about 2 months. More then doubled in size and girth. Pbass grow fast my friend, you'll be able to put the bichir back in no time
