Polypterus Ornate overeating

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I appreciate you telling me your experience not just saying do it this way. I'm willing to give it a try. The tilapia is much cheaper than feeders anyway and the bag I bought should last a decent amount of time. I get where everyone is coming from. I just know how I will feel if this fails and she dies. Like I said before when I tried to force her to eat pellets she didn't eat for nearly 2 and a half weeks. Well see how this goes once she's a little less plump. Hopefully the delhezi and the frontosa that are in this tank won't turn into picky brats as well. Luckily they do eat the masivore pellets and shrimp pellets.
your other fish won't get picky, just wait out the ornate, she'll eat come hell or high water lol. I suggest tilapia first seeing as its much easier to break a predator onto frozen first, then work your way to offering her pellets

my senegalensis only eat pellets, nothing else. why won't he eat his veggies? :P

I would love to figure a way to feed live as a treat. Whats an easy fish to breed ? Minnows ?

Live-bearers....Guppys, Mollys, Platys, etc. You already have cichlids.....a pair of Jewels will yield about 300-400 fry every MONTH compared to the Convict which breed as frequent but only produces 40-100 per clutch, mine only do around 60 atm. My Jewel fry are only 12 days old and eating crushed flakes already, the previous are 1 & 1/2 months and are 1/4" and starting to look like their parents already. Growth rate was more than twice of the Convicts at the same temp; 78F

EDIT: I like the ornate as your avatar better, dude :)

Guppys/mollys/platys require heating ? Can i keep them at room temp and still mate ?

if you want quantity regularly, my Jewels breed every month and grow a great bit faster, so I'd go with a pair of Jewels, IMO. I only have 1 clutch on Convicts from a 2.5 months ago.....of about 60-80. I have over 500 Jewels from 2 clutches in 1.5 months . Jewels definitely
