Polypterus weeksii or congicus?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the replies. Was actually my first choice but was really afraid of the price lol. Still leaning on the congicus side tho. Why would you guys choose congicus over lap?

*Edit: weeksii not lap

i would say it depends on your tank, because it sounds like with the money you get right now that it'd be really hard to upgrade in the future to a tank to suit a very large fish (20-24" fish at least probably more since it's wild caught). But all that stuff aside i'd pick weeksii, IMO they just look so prehistoric. As to weeksii being the biggest eaters mine is the rebel i guess lol haven't seen him eat in the last 4-5 months. However every couple months he'll have a little bulge in his belly after i feed tilapia.

Obviously, your question depends on the size of the aquarium your fish will go in.

My assumption is that the Weeksii growth rate will be much slower so you can go back and get the Congi when you can afford the second bichir. If you start with the Congi and decide to add the Weeksii later you may feel uncomfortable adding a smaller Weeksii to the Congi tank and you will end up with another grow-out tank :)

Also, I think the Weeksii is a much cooler looking fish.

I have endlis, laps, ornates and 2 weeksii now. The endlis are the best eaters and the weeksii are by far the worst eaters. Pellets disappear but i have never seen them eat (they are in a separate grow-out tank.)

Will be putting them in a 75 then will be receiving a 125 probably before christmas and will put them in an outdoor pond with some gar :D Got their futures insured lol. Well then I just got to go to the store and check them out. Will buy the best looking poly regardless of species.

And btw the store also sells a Platinum Super Red Arowana. Damn that thing must cost a lot but is sure dang pretty. A little off topic but that sure as hell made me drop my jaw. Thats how legit the store is.

I agree with the crew both. If io had to get one 1st go for congicus. Then put a weeki on hold.

Hey guys. I've been researching on weeksiis and found that they are somewhat very shy and are one of the slowest growing bichirs out there. Is this information true? If yes then I might go for congicus instead being that theyre more food aggressive and less shy than a weeksii

All the lower jaws look the same to me. I'd go with the weeksii. As far as how shy they are, every fish is different. My weeksii window surfs a lot, or is hiding. I have to agree with their appetite and growth rate though, as mine eats and eats but doesn't grow much.

In general, Congicus grow faster than Weeksii. But I've seen some Weeksii grow fast and I've seen some grow slow.
