Polypterus with Oscar and FM?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Think I'm more than likely looking at getting a Polypterus Senegalus for the 100g tank when it's arrived and cycled :)

Know someone with a firemouth in with small 10" polys. It should be fine. I've seen some giant thick FM trade ins at the LFS . It should be fine.

That's probably a good decision, the endli would push it in size when full grown. A full grown cb Senegal will probably hit 10" if you're lucky. Look into delhezis too, they get slightly larger than the Senegal but have very cool patterns and have great personalities. You could easily do both

This is tough... i'd rather keep the oscar with a lower jaw like a cb endli. The poly mentioned should be ok but if the oscar quickly out grows some of the slower growing upper jaws it could be trouble. A hungry full grown oscar will try amd eat anuthing it can fit in its mouth. Olus getting food to the polys could be an issue

This is true too... Depends on size of Oscar vs size of poly. I'd go for a bigger poly at time of purchase, the risk to a young Oscar is low with an upper jaw due to the size of their mouth. But yeah you may need to look into target feeding the polys since Os are such fatties

I was worrying about the oscar, too.

I wonder if a CB endli would be ok in his tank? Or maybe go with a Delhezi because they're built kind of girthier. Maybe you can find a WC Del which might get bigger. I'd try to get the bichir first if you can in a smaller tank and grow it out.

Hope it works for you. Polys are awesome.

Senegals are amazing! They are so active :)

As to mix with cichlids idk, even my wc specimen doesn't bother anyone

I was actually going to say, should I get the Bichir first, let it grow out for a bit first before getting the Oscar and FM?

Probably a good idea. You just need to get food past the cichlids for the poly to eat long term
