Pond water changes and waterfall flow

Rock pads are a good thing.
 
How important is the UV sterilizer/filter in the cooler months? Is it just needed in summer? The pond gets maybe a half day dirrect sun at the most
 
Depends on how much "food" is avail. for the water. Dead leaves, untrimmed plants in the pond, extra food that is not eaten are factors that will determine if you need the UV. All that stuff will foul the water making it necessary to use it.
