pond with no filteration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The stream starts on top of my land and flows down a steep hill. Nobody access it till it gets out of my land, so I'm clear of chemicals.
I think you are correct about the mud-pond thing. Mine is already cement anyway.
But a general question, how would I know whether a soil bottom will hold water or not? Is that a characteristic of the soil in particular location? Is there a way to figure that out?

okay2. i dont think soo, my mud pond is okay. i just dig and flows water in it. but the sides of a mud pond i think u should be wary about. i have carps and tilapia in my ponds and they sumtimes chew on the sides which could create a hole tht'll make water flow through, but if u cement it'll be okay. and a mud pond with rocks will be better as they will reduce the murkiness of water. a cemented pond is the same as an aquarium, u have to give special medicines and do regular water changes. but if there is always water supply flowing in and out then it's okay. eventhough a cemented bottom, their poop will not be disposed and can cloud the water, but this depends on where the water will flow out.

I am starting to build a pond (3.5 feet deep and about 1500 gallons). Will post pictures of the digging in a couple of week's time.
There is a nearby stream where I can get a supply pipe to the pond. It has water year around, therefore what I'm considering is a constant supply of water from the stream and an outflow from the pond back to the stream.
I think I will not need any filtering due to the constant supply of fresh water. There will be a drain at the bottom when I want to empty the pond to clear up anything left in the bottom (leaves etc).
Any negative aspects of this plan that I am not seeing?
Thanks for inputs.

I would never use that as a water source. Yes, it may be tempting, but it is way too unreliable a source. Say there is something in the soil thats bad for fish..they die. Maybe somebody dumps waste nearby or in your water source..fish die. Also, there are probably tons of parasites and who knows what else in there. I wouldnt do it, and I strongly recommend that you dont either.

I respect your opinion, but I disagree on this. I know there is nobody dumping chemical or waste nearby since I've been watching this stream for more than two years now. The parasites and anything else that happen in nature, well, that is what the fish live with in natural world and they always do better than in our artificial fish tanks.

Anyway, thanks for your advice. I'm yet to finish the cement layering of this thank since I've been very busy at work and building another 300g outdoor tank at my home. I'll keep updating this thread when I'm done with the tank.

Interesting build. You know the risk so no need for me to say anything, I'll sit back and enjoy the project :)

Mother nature could be a #$*@$ so careful with the mosquitos that have that virus (west Nile ) that's a land mine for them and no.moving water just be careful ..I would still make a DIY filter

Nothing like some mosquito fish can't handle haha.

Cool build man, can't really see the scenery but I like it.

can you elaborate on the mosquito thing further? I believe there won't be any mosquito breeding when there is fish (am I wrong here?). Also there will be no still water. The supply from the stream to the pond and outflow will be constantly happening.

This build is going much slower than I anticipated, but it is definitely moving on. I'm hoping to get to the water filling state this month somehow. The part where water coming in (form of a water fall) is in progress. I've attached a couple of pictures here. Will post more pictures of the surrounding area soon.

Yes, there will be lots of plants inside and on the border. The look will be as natural as possible.
