Pool conversion, pbass and gars

For an 8' deep pool it might be better to power these things with a powerhead (Koralia?) rather than a bubbler and plumb it through a hole in the bottom/side rather than straight up the middle, but if you've got the space these things really work and with little electricity draw. It'll certainly stop-gap for times when the main filter is turned off. In 8' of water you could use a 60Gallon Rum barrel- that'd be pretty groovy. As we found here, just use gravel and, as necessary, put the lilly root-ball in a burlap bag of soil. This charcoal/coir/soil/gravel situation was massive overkill and way too much trouble.
For the main filter, look into either solar power or a full solar pump system. You may loose a little pressure for volume (or visa versa) and have to tweak the head of the big sump, but have a look.

Well I've got one piar formed and cleaning a step in the pool and another male staking out a large trough of gravel with a rock in the middle. Bring on the summer rains! Might go get some feral oscars from the creek down the road as well, be nice in the mix.
First clutch has been laid on a log, didn't even see the pair there this morning so could end up with 3 pairs.
**** pic of one group of fry at the surface. These guys are about 1/4 inch, there is a bigger group of 1/2 inchers (about 1000) with another pair as well. Not bad considering the parents are only 14 or so months old.

Feeding is actually getting a bit wild, pbass launching completely out of the water when they hit the pellets. Fry are now about 1" and regularly at the surface and shallows feeding on daphnis and stuff. Almost time to pull them out and train to pellets. Will be interesting to see if I can get a 2 spawnings this season as it is only the beginning of summer and the wet season.
