Pool Filter Sand is terrible...OFFICIAL

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ever since I started using PFS I won't go to any other type of substrate, you might have just got an unusually dirty batch. Mine didn't take very long to clean and when my fish dig and swim around with mouthfuls and spit it out it always settles immediately with no cloudiness.

Can you expand on this? What sand is heavier? Also how do you test the sand to see if it is cloudy?

There a lot of different sands in the market, actually I've got no clue for which brand or what name does the sand goes good or bad. But For you to see if it's cloudy you must simply (after rinse) bash it into a water container preferably a small tank just to see if it's cloudy or not. The other guys, though they seem to be flaming around has told the important points regarding PFS. I use natural black river sand... found on the river in our place, you could tell if the sand is heavy also if it settles quickly into the ground, and when you clean up the substrate with a siphon, mine's heavy as it is, though I clean it directly with siphon it doesn't get sucked up.

Has anyone considered that "pool filter sand" might vary in its composition around the globe? Perhaps Australian PFS is crap compared to the US stuff? I bought a bag of NS PFS years ago and it was completely different to the stuff you guys have. I just use regular "builders sand", but it needs to be washed thoroughly despite the packaging claiming it is "washed".

Are you sure you got pool filter sand and not play sand/sand box sand? I've never had any experience with play sand/sand box sand but what your experiencing is something I've heard those who used play sand complain about. It's due to it's extremely fine consistency, the particles are so small that their weight isn't enough for it to settle quickly. As such any stirring clouds the water and it takes forever to clear. Better yet why don't you post a pic of the bag you used or tell us the name brand etc. this way we can see exactly what your using.

Unfortunately I have thrown the bags or, but I went to a pool specialist shop and bought 16/33 pfs for sure

calm down, only thing making it look ugly is the lack of good decor, those awful lights and that hideous background. sorry, i'm brutally honest sometimes

Each to their own I love the lights background and decor...

I stopped having sand when my cichlids took to grabbing mouths fulls and spitting out by the filter intakes, sand is not good for impeller chambers. suppose i could have booted the intakes but still.

I agree...with cichlids there seems to be more cons than pros

What are the rest of the cons?

I've used pfs in tanks for about 20 and never lost and impeller. Ever.
