I've used quickcrete sand before. I definitely prefer pool filter sand over play sand. The price isn't all that different and pool filter sand is a lot cleaner and coarser. It takes much less rinsing to get it ready for a tank and it's much less likely to become compacted and form anaerobic areas on the bottom of the tank (bad news for fish).
