I have a Mix in all My tanks right now (salt and pepper) Very soon I plan to add a LOT more black to my 210. Its my front tank and I want to darken it up a bit. Still gona be salt and pepper but more pepper than salt I guess -lol

Over the years I have slowly converted all my tanks to Pool Filter sand. Its a little less messy and easier to clean and my cichlids love it. PFS is by far my favorite substrate and its not too expensive.

To messy with big cichlids that re-arrange the sand as if it is there job..

I envy all of your tanks! Never new that white sand is what the natural substrate was in the wild. always thought it would've been dark blacks/greys/browns...

Well it's not exactly white. More like muddy brownish...there are some cool underwater amazon videos on YouTube

I run the salt & pepper look too but use the Eco-Complete Cichlid substrate.

i like the looks of the black diamond in my 75 but in my 265 i have pool filter sand mixed with river rock and it is so much eaisier to clean b/c the sand is heaivier and doesnt get sucked into the siphon so i vote for the ease of maitnance

I prefer the natural look of play sand. Check out the quickrete all purpose sand that Forrest uses in his tanks. Not just one grain size like PFS, but a more natural mix of different colors & sizes, including numerous small pebbles.
