Well I'm getting my Geo's tomorrow (Friday) and have been thinking about changing my tank up a bit today. I was going to just go to Petsmart and buy some Sand but have heard some mentioning Pool Filter Sand that you can buy at home depot. Is this sand ok for Geo's? I have heard that it tends to have sharp edges and with Geo's digging so much I'm worried it may harm them. Does anyone else use this type of sand with there Geo's? I think i will go with all sand and driftwood and a few smooth rocks this time around and no caves. I would need to do this tonight if i'm going to do it at all. Right now the tank has medium sized gravel but i wanted to give the new Geo's a tank that they can really play in. I do have a pair Oblongums in the tank right now and would it be ok to leave them in the tank while I switch out the gravel for sand?

Pool filter sand is perfectly fine. Lowes and Home depot also sell silica sand which is fine as well as quickrete multi purpose sands which have more color to them. I had Geos on all of these at one point or another.

Which would you recommend? I'm going to go get it today. I do like white sand if possible. I'm thinking the Silica based?

i got mine from home depot. it was about $5 for 40-50lbs. its pretty natural of a color. i've always had geos in my tank with it and they have had no problems. i actually mixed in a bag of tahitian moon sand and looks pretty cool. just make sure you dont get play sand. it has alot of variation in size of the sand, it can be very very fine then have good sized chunks in it

it should be ok to leave the Oblongums in the tank while switching the sand out. just clean the sand first because it will prolly cloud your tank. mine clouded my tank for about a week or so since i didn't rinse it.

Thanks for the reply. Well i'm going to stop by home depot on the way home from work and get some.

Well i changed from gravel to sand. I got the all purpose silica sand from Home depot. Right now its pretty dirty looking but i just turned the filters back on so it seems to be clearing up nicely. I will post some pics over the weekend but I'm sure it will still be cloudy.

where the megasema pics at? :D

I had a horrible experience with the all purpose sand. Its actually burning the fish and I can't stand the smell. I would never recommend this sand to anyone. It smells toxic to me. I went out and looked for the pool filter sand again after removing the all purpose sand but still haven't been able to find it. The all purpose sand is horrible stuff. I had to move my oblongum pair into my angelfish tank and I really hope they pull through. They look like crap. Anyway i had to put the megasemas into a different tank because i serisously think i've destroyed my entire bacteria bed with this sand. Oh what a day. I think I'm just going to put the gravel back into the tank and call it a day.

wel def try the pool filter sand, im not sure what it is you used but did you rinse it at all? if you get the pool filter sand be sure to rinse it well and you will have barely any clouding, but yeah if that all purpose stuff was burning the fish then it probably messed with your biological media as well, you might want to pick up some cycle or something as well to kick start it again, but yeah i wouldnt give up otherwise you did all that work and then wouldnt even have a different looking tank that would be better for the geos
