wel def try the pool filter sand, im not sure what it is you used but did you rinse it at all? if you get the pool filter sand be sure to rinse it well and you will have barely any clouding, but yeah if that all purpose stuff was burning the fish then it probably messed with your biological media as well, you might want to pick up some cycle or something as well to kick start it again, but yeah i wouldnt give up otherwise you did all that work and then wouldnt even have a different looking tank that would be better for the geos

Thanks Sarah. I've been having some really bad luck lately. I am going to go look for pool filter sand again but for now i'm just going to stop for today. I've already wasted my whole day off on this quikrit all purpose sand. What a nightmare. My Oblongums seem to be ok at the moment but would be dead if i'd left them in that tank. Now I have 2 over crowded tanks and a empty 125 so I'm going to go get some Danios and see what happens to them. I'm also going to pick up a new test kit because I'm sure this tank is shot. Oh, I rinsed the crap out of this stuff.

I had a horrible experience with the all purpose sand. Its actually burning the fish and I can't stand the smell. I would never recommend this sand to anyone. It smells toxic to me. I went out and looked for the pool filter sand again after removing the all purpose sand but still haven't been able to find it. The all purpose sand is horrible stuff. I had to move my oblongum pair into my angelfish tank and I really hope they pull through. They look like crap. Anyway i had to put the megasemas into a different tank because i serisously think i've destroyed my entire bacteria bed with this sand. Oh what a day. I think I'm just going to put the gravel back into the tank and call it a day.

Very sorry to hear that :( Does ring a bell tho - is the all-purpose sand supposed to be used for construction or sand blasting? I remember reading about it (not good) when I researched for substrates.

Have you tried pool supply stores?

You can go without substrates temporarily. I'm QTing a few S. acuticeps in a BB tank and they are ok. Not a long term plan tho.

so if i was to go and get some pool filter sand what brand should i get and what should it say on it?

I thinks its called Zoolife or something along those lines and so far I haven't found it either. What ever you do DON"T use the quickrit all purpose sand from Lowes or home depot. I have learned the hard way.

ok thanks did you see any sand there labeled as pool filter though?

I finally got the Pool filter sand at a pool supply store. Look up swimmiing pool spa supply stores in your area. I'm changing out this tank again today. The all purpose sand destroyed my bacteria bed so i'm basically starting over again.

heres a pic i found

That looks like pool filter sand to me. Can you buy it locally? The one I got was called Aquaquarts and i bought it at a spa/pool shop. It looks really good and wasn't even that dirty. It only took me about a 1/2 hour to change it out and the tank is already clear.

i don't know if i can buy this locally but i'm going to home depot sunday and i'm gonna look around
