I have pool filter sand in my tank how low should I drop my intakes to the bottom?

I would say that you should keep the intake tubes several inches away from the sand. Sand and filter's do not mix, I learned this the hard way by having my intake on an Emperor 400 to low. I ended up ruining the filter. Save yourself some $ and keep that intake up high :) Also keep in mind that the sand will get stirred up from time to time so be sure to rinse it like crazy before adding it to you tank so it settles easier. Good Luck with your set up :)

I rinsed the sand very well and have my Fluval 305 running in my 120 to get it going.i have a fluval FX5 as well but I am waiting on my order to come in for new hoses for both filters. The 2 tanks I had these filters in were much shorter so I had to get new hoses.I am trying to figure out if I should run my intakes on both sides of the thank or more close to the middle.

i had mine around 5" and i was getting sand in my filter still. that and the flow was kicking up sand and i could never get my tank fully clear. i ended up switching back to gravel. which is too bad cause i really liked the look of the sand.

I will run mine 12" up and see how it works out

With the hoses you Can always cut them shorter if needed but can't grow it back if you cut it short. I think I have my fx5 intake about 5 inches. Out flow tube is near the top of the tank. Over two weeks I do get a little sand in the filter but almost none. Also depends on grain size of different sands. Mine is fine but not super fine.
