Pool Sand vs. Play Sand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
In the 55 and 75 I used homedepots medium grade quickrete white sand. very minimal washing. Great sand and is of the heavier kind.

I am a pool plasterer and I actually used the pool sand we put in our plaster which is crushed dolomite. It worked good but some of it was smaller than other granules and it took days for the water to clear. I washed it like a madman too.it was bright white but that didn't last long for fish poop isn't and I didn't like how much vacuuming I had to do to keep it looking white. That being said we do pebble finishes too so I have an endless supply of rock for my aquarium needs! If I did sand again it would be pfs.

no just grain size. The 55 used to have the black moon sand from petsmart $$ but nice sand.

i use caribsea Tahitian moon sand. better than the stuff from petco, the granuals are smaller but dont float in the water. always wash it first tho, there's a dust layer that will float on the surface of your tank water.

Thanks for all the input guys. If I wanted to go the black sand rout is there any one better than the other?

Black diamond blasting grit is way cheaper than "aquarium" sands. I get mine at tractor supply, 8 bucks for 50lbs. Just be sure you wash it really really well.

If you can mix it in the bucket with ur hand and the water is still clear its clean, if not then its NOT clean. PLaysand its best to wash 10-15lbs at a time so you get all the dirt out. Never had a problem with play sand clouding water.
