How exactly does ozone remove NO3 and PO4?

If you are doing a fish only kind of tank, ozone sterilization will break down anything (as an oxidizer) you need to be worried about. Most big facilities do it this way - fresh and saltwater systems. I hate additives and chemical crap that stores try to sell you. Not worth it, don't use, never had a problem. Granted, I've only done this personally up to 500,000 gallons, but I know GA Aq does the same thing on Ocean Voyager... so that has to say someting right?

Also works to clean up a 'poor' water source. At the aquarium here, we use bay water - and it's chemistry is worse than the water you guys will get after doing a gravel vac. After a good hit of O3, it's crystal clear and almost perfect chemistry-wise for our newest display.

A small set up only costs a couple hundred bucks.

It removes them by oxidizing them. You burn out the waste organics prior to them being broken down by the aerobic bacteria. More or less, you are taking the waste part out of the ammonia cycle.

Are you saying that it physically destroys waste before it has a chance to become ammonia and phosphate?

What does that broken down waste become? This is just very interesting, I wasnt aware that this worked like that, and...I would be interested potentially to do some experimenting of my own.

Yes. If you get into the chemistry of it, more or less the O3 is letting one of the oxygen atoms bond with other compounds in the water changing the composition of them. Oxidation similar to iron rusting.

My ozone burnt water comes out with zeros on phosphate etc.... it's like starting fresh.

so can you point us to a unit that will work in home aquarium systems to reclaim the water? how do you set it up? Do you run the drained water through the system and then back into your main setup? Will this also work for reef tanks?
